Heffelfinger."  and "Misses Flora and Hanna Deems were the guest of C. R. Hanes and family in Chicago over Sunday."

In the Butler Record, Nov. 16, 1900 it says, "Mrs. C. R. Hanes and children arrived here Wednesday from Chicago.  They will probably make this their home."

Dec. 21, 1900, The Butler Record says, "C. R. Hanes, who has been in the employ of Armour & Co., of  Chicago, for some time arrived in the city Saturday.  He will make Butler his home of a year, at least, and work on his mother's farm two miles west of the city."

"Mrs. C. R. Hanes and baby returned from Ann Arbor, Mich., Tuesday evening "....The Butler Record Oct. 17, 1902.

Aug. 29, 1903 Butler Record it says, "Mrs. C. R. Hanes went to Ann Arbor, Mich. Monday, where she took her youngest child for treatment."

In the Butler Record, March 10, 1905, "C. R. Hanes met with quite an accident Tuesday.  In trying to climb a fence with an ax and saw, the ax slipped entering a severe gash in one of his limbs."

In the Butler Record, Oct. 5, 1906, "C. R. Hanes, who had his sale Wednesday, will move to Waterloo to make his home."

On a postcard dated Nov. 26, 1907 from Saint Francis Wisconsin to his mother Mrs. G. W. Haines, Butler, "My present headquarters  Cameron."  It is a picture of Pion Nono College, St. Francis, Wis.  Either he is going to college or working doing something at the college.

April 5, 1909, The Auburn Courier, "C. R. Haines expected to move his family to Auburn next week, where he is employed in the poultry packing house.  Mr. Haines has made many friends in Waterloo since his residence here and will be missed greatly by the people here."

July 21, 1911, The Butler Record, "C. Hains and daughter, Hazel returned to their home in Chicago Sunday after a weeks visit with relatives.  Mrs. Hains and son William remained for a longer visit."

From the Chicago Tribune, July 26, 1928. "AT THE MOVIES At the movies, which we rarely attend, my wife invariable becomes chilly and starts struggling to raise her furs or wraps over her shoulders, and it's always necessary for me to assist.   While she worked on the election board I attended alone.  A man with two ladies took seats beside me, the ladies sitting between us.  Just as the big picture started the lady next to me began tugging at her wraps identically as my wife does, and absorbed, with eyes on the screen, I reached back and gave or started to reached back and gave or started to give the usual assistance and – O, boy!  I know my apology was wasted and was afraid of being arrested as a masher if I walked if I walked out, so I sat through.  Embarrassed?  I hope they see this and believe my stammered explanation.  C. R. H."  This news article was in the Clara Hanes McCague and family scrapbook.

In the Hanes-Altenburg family and Clara McCague scrapbooks, "POP HAINES GETS SEND-OFF  The Armour Journal of recent date, gave a former Butler boy a great send-off which is herewith copied.  However "Pop" Haines, was "Cam" Haines when he was here.  He is a brother of Mrs. Eston McCague and Mr. Carl Haines.  "One of the most likable persons at Green street is "Pop" Haines, our egg salesman. "Pop's" a Hoosier, and, though he has spent a good part of his life in Chicago, he still retains the marked individuality that is characteristic of small town folks.  It is probably this that adds to his personality that uncommon something that people like to find in others, and which makes for popularity.  "Pop" is an old-timer in the produce business.  For a number of years he was an official inspector for the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, in which position he soon gained an enviable reputation for honesty and capability.  Here at Green Street, too, he is becoming noted for his fairness and his knowledge of eggs and an increasing number of our customers are learning they can depend on him with the fullest confidence.  We like "Pop"--you'll like him, everybody does, so be sure and meet him next time you're at Green Street."

His obituary was in the March 9, 1939 Butler paper.  It says, "Cameron Reed Haines was born near Butler, Indiana, July 5, 1867, of William Haines and Harriett Altenberg Haines, and passed from his life on March 4, 1939 after only a few hours illness of pneumonia.  Cameron was the eldest of a family of seven children, all of who survive him, Mrs. Sarah Heffelfinger, Chicago; Mrs. Ella Gardner, Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Mrs. Wilmetta Atwater, Goshen; Altenberg Haines, Waterloo; Carl Haines, and Mrs. Clara McCague of Butler.  On June 27, 1891 Mr. Haines was united in marriage to Miss Ida E. Murphy of Butler.  They set up their home in Kendallville.  Later they resided on a farm near Butler for a number of years.  For the last thirty years their residence has been in Chicago where Mr. Haines has been employed by the Armour and Company, where he served his employers faithfully until twenty-eight hours before his death at four o'clock Saturday afternoon. To Mr. and Mrs. Haines five children were born, Mrs. Hazel Vane, Lansing Michigan; Roscoe and Waldo, deceased in early childhood; William Haines and Mrs. Harriett Dickey of Chicago, and one grandchild, Miss Gloria Mae Dickey, also of Chicago.  He was a member of the Oddfellows lodge.  Sadness is added to this occasion because of the serious illness of his wife, which came about since the shock of his unexpected death."

Betty Geyer had a notation that he died in a flu epidemic.

Notes for Ida E. Murphy:

In the Butler Record Oct. 29, 1897 it says, "Mrs. Eli Deems visited her niece, Mrs. C.R. Hanes and family at Kendallville last week."

Notes for Ida E. Murphy:  According to an obituary of Sarah Jane Johnson, she may have been raised by Sarah Jane Johnson and Eli Deems.  It says, "....but took to raise three children when they were but a few months old, Mrs. Ida Haines and Roy and Guy Johnson."  Also notice Roy Johnson married a Latson, a cousin to the Hanes/Haine's

Friday, April 17, 1903, The Butler Record, "Mrs. C. Hanes and daughter left for Ann Arbor Sunday where the child will receive treatment."

Florence had a note that she died May 1961, but I got her death date as 1959 from the gravestone records. Her obituary record shows that she died in 1959.

In an obituary that was in Clara McCague's possession, it said, "FORMER BUTLER RESIDENT IS DEAD AT AGE 85 YEARS   Mrs. Ida Haines, 85, widow of the late Carmeron (should be Cameron) Haines who resided in Butler for a number of years before moving to Chicago 45 years ago, died in a Chicago hospital Wednesday morning of senility.  Mrs. Haines had been in critical condition for a week and had been hospitalized during that time.  The body is being returned to the Johnson funeral home in Butler where friends may call.  Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home at 2 p.m. Saturday with burial following in the Butler Cemetery.  Mrs. Haines was born in DeKalb county on May 5, 1874 and resided in the Butler area all of her lifetime before moving to Chicago.  Her husband died in 1939.  Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Hazel McNamon of Lansing, Mich., and Miss Harriett Haines of Chicago; a son, William Haines of Milton, Wis., and three grandchildren.  Mrs. Haines was a member of a Methodist church in Chicago."

2. Carlton Rosco Hanes, born Aug.ust 17, 1894 in Kendallville, Indiana  Noble Co.; died June 27, 1904 in Wilmington Twp.  DeKalb Co., IN.

Notes for Carlton Rosco Hanes:
Death records of DeKalb County show his father's name as C. R. Haines with his birthplace as Indiana.

He is buried in the Butler Cemetery.

His obituary says, "On last Monday evening, two miles west of this city (Butler), occurred one of the saddest accidents and cast a gloom over the entire neighborhood when Roscoe, oldest son of Cameron Hanes was instantly killed.  He was standing on the orth track, opposite his home, watching a passenger freight train and did not notice the approaching fast train (No. 16), which struck him and killed him instantly. His face was terrible cut and bruised, left leg broken and his whole body bruised.  The train went nearly to the next crossing before it could stop, then backed up and took the body accompanied by P.H. Pallmerton to Butler where it was taken to Mr. Briggs undertaking rooms.  It was thought best to leave the remains there until the next morning when they were taken to his home.  The parents and friends have the deepest and most heart-felt sympathy of the entire community.  Carlton Roscoe Hanes was born at Kendallville, IN Aug. 17, 1894 and died June 27, 1904 aged 9 years, 10 months and 10 days.  Although his life was of few days his work was well done, priding himself in passing his school grade, and in helping on the farm and in the home.  Then in his childish play, rushed out from his father's home only a few steps to meet the reaper death with his sickle keen and be taken from his earthly home to his father's home in Heaven.  The service was conducted at the home Wed. June 29 by H. Smith.  There was a very large concourse of people present."

3. George Waldo Hanes, born November 28, 1896; died May 11, 1899 in Chicago, IL.

Notes for George Waldo Hanes:
It says he died in Chicago, Ill according to his obituary.  It is only a part of his obituary that was in the papers given to me by Theron Hanes, 1999.  His funeral was at G. W. Hanes farm.

There was more information on a sheet of paper given to me by Theron Hanes.  He was called Waldo and he is buried in the Butler cemetery.

Also found death date on sheets of paper copied from a family bible.

4.  William Hanes, born September 29, 1901

William Hanes

Notes for William Hanes:
Did William have a wife or sister named Carolyn?  He is grouped with her twice in the family reunion notes.  Did William then have a son Tommy?

This is a guess as in the Butler Record, Fri. Oct. 4, 1901 it says, "Born to Mr. and Mrs. C. R. Hanes, Sunday Sept 29, 1901 a son.  Since this is the only son that I didn't have a birth date on, I presume this birthdate belongs with William.

"Mrs. C. R. Hanes and baby returned from Ann Arbor, Mich., Tuesday evening"....The Butler Record Oct. 17, 1902.

July 21, 1911, The Butler Record, "C. Hains and daughter, Hazel returned to their home in Chicago Sunday after a weeks visit with relatives.  Mrs. Hains and son William remained for a longer visit."

Sept. 3, 1915, The Butler Record, "Master Wm. Hanes of Chicago, who has been spending the summer with his grandmother, Mrs. Harriet Hanes of near Butler, returned home Monday."

He is living in Milton, Wisconsin at the time of his mother's death.

In a postcard dated 1910, "William got a hair cut.   Hazel.    Dear Grandma:  This is my new suit.  Ain't I fat?  I am feeling real good.  Hazel & I have been up town all day.  Hope you are well.  William   This was sent to his grandmother, Mrs. G. W. Hanes.

In another postcard dated 1912 (from Chicago, IL)  Hello Aunt Clara.  Come up and I have a slide on my tobogan.   Papa made me a dandy in the back yard love to grandma and all  William Haines.
