Caleb is documented later as being named Charles Edwin Whiting. The 1850
Census confirms a middle initial E, but it is unclear if the name Caleb was
recorded incorrectly or if Caleb E. Whiting changed his name to Charles E.
Whiting. The earliest record of Charles E. Whiting is from his first marriage to
Annie Carlton, in which Caleb is listed as Edwin Whiting. Present day
descendants of Charles (Caleb) indicate that he saw military duty with the Union
during the Civil War and moved to the South after the war. No record of military service has been located as yet. His
brother Levi F. Whiting did serve and his record is given in his notes.
Caleb's (or Charles') occupation was a carpenter.
Notes for Annie M. Carlton:
There a few discrepancies in the records with regard to Annie's middle
initial, her birth year, and her marriage date. The earliest record we have for
Annie is her marriage to Edwin (Caleb E.) Whiting on 6 Sep 1865. On this record,
her middle initial is M and her age is listed as 27, which makes her birth year
1837/1838. Their divorce record indicates they were actually married on 6 Sep
1866 and that her Annie's middle initial was R. No ages are provided on this
record. Annie's death record shows her middle initial to be S and indicates she
died of structural brain disease in the New Hampshire State Asylum. Her age is
given as 51 years, which makes her birth year 1843.

Desendants of Leon's father, Caleb (Charles) E. Whiting report that Leon was sent to live with the Nelson family in Tamworth as a child. What is assumed through various records is that he was sent away after 1876, the year his parents divorced. Evidently, his mother was committed to the State Asylum and his father moved to Florida, where Leon eventually relocated as an adult.
