According to the 1850 census for Massachusetts, George and wife Ellen were living in Lowell, Middlesex, Massachusetts with two other families in a single dwelling. The head of the household was listed as Asa Hayford, 28 of New Hampshire. His family consisted of wife, Ann, of New Brunswick, and three children, all of New Brunswick. Two other people were living in the house: James Robinson, 21 and Mary Robinson, 28, both of Scotland. There have been Robinsons and Hayfords in Tamworth since the the early days of the town's history. One wonders if all three families were from Tamworth and went to Lowell, Massachusetts for work and lived togetherout of necessity to save expenses.

In 1870, George's occupation was listed as teamster. From his grand-daughter, Doris Whiting Brown, the story goes that he drove a stage coach to pick up passengers from the paddlewheelers on Lake Winnepesauke and took them north to Conway. In 1870 he owned real estate valued at $250 and his personal estate was valued at $200.

There is contradictory evidence about Ellen Johnson's birthplace. The 1860 Census for New Hampshire reports her birthplace as Massachusetts. The 1850 census for Massachusetts reports her birthplace as New Hampshire. Both place her birth year about 1828.
