William Woolliscroft 1767-1840

of Blurton, Staffordshire, England

St Bartholomew, Blurton, Staffordshire

William Woolliscroft died in Blurton, Staffordshire in July 1840,. His burial record states he was aged 73. A Sarah Woolliscroft died in Blurton in October 1847 aged 60. I believe that William and Sarah were husband and wife.  The only marriage I have found is that of William Woolliscroft and Sarah Parkes at Grindon in Staffordshire in 1808. At the time of their marriage William was living in Grindon and Sarah was from Waterfall. William was a labourer.

In 1841 she was living with her daughter Eliza and granddaughter Sarah aged 18 months. Sarah gave her age as 50 on the census returns but when she died her age was given as 59, so she would have been 20 when she married William if the marriage is correct.

William and Sarah’s daughter Eliza died in 1845. In 1851 Eliza’s daughter Sarah was living with her aunt and uncle, Elizabeth and Thomas Wise. Sarah was still living with Thomas and Elizabeth ten years later. By 1881 she was the housekeeper for Samuel Jarvis in Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire. Her aunt Elizabeth Wise had died in 1869.

The couple were tenants of the Sutherland family in 1835. Sarah continued to live in Blurton after her husbands death where she was a ‘potter’.

Elizabeth Wise was in fact Elizabeth Woolliscroft, the eldest child of William & Sarah. She married Thomas Wise, a potters printer on Christmas Day 1826 at Trentham, Staffordshire. [Blurton is in Trentham Parish.] When Thomas and Elizabeth’s eldest child Mary was christened in 1828 at the Methodist Chapel in Longton, Stoke on Trent the record states that her mother was Elzabeth, the daughter of William Woolinscroft of Blurton, Staffordshire.

Mary Wise 1828

William and Sarah may be the same couple who had two other daughters, Martha & Sarah, who were baptised at Grindon, Staffordshire in 1808.

In my opinion William is most likely the son of William Woolliscroft and Mary Belfield of Grindon, Staffordshire if his age at his death is correct but again I have not found a baptismal record for him so far in my research.
