John Willescroft c1510-1568 of Stone, Staffordshire

John Willescroft c1510-1568 of Stone, Staffordshire

John was the son and heir of William Wylliscroft of Great Bridgeford, Staffordshire. He married Agnes Clyffe, the cousin of Ralph Clyffe of Meadford, Staffordshire. The land at Podmore first mentioned in 1488 was part of his marriage settlement. After his marriage he lived in Aston by Stone, Staffordshire. He is listed on the 1539 Muster Roll for a ‘bill’ (a type of pike weapon). Five years later his father assigned him the fee farm rent for the land in Podmore, Staffordshire.

John was still living in 1557 when he was named the overseer of his brother Roger’s will. I think he is very likely the John Willescroft who died in 1568 and administration of his estate was granted on the 17 October at Stone.

The parish records for Stone in Staffordshire commence in 1568 as a result it isn’t recorded as to whether John and Agnes had children. If the land at Podmore was inherited by Fee Entail then it would have passed to his eldest surviving son. If no son existed it would have gone back to his father’s brothers and their descendants. All I can say for certainty is that the land remained in the possession of the Willescroft family living in the Stone area. More
