In Union Cemetery,
in the Town of Fort Edward,
Washington County, NY,
there are two Civil War
Monuments
The first is of tarnished
metal and stone.
“IN HONOR
of those who fought and died; of those who fought and lived; this
monument is erected by the citizens of the towns of Fort Edward and Kingsbury.

Grant that the memory of our noble dead, who freely gave their lives
for the land they loved, may dwell ever in our hearts.
__________________________
That we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in
vain, that this nation under God shall have a new birth of freedom, and that
government of the people, by the people, and for the people shall not perish
from the earth. “
There is also one headstone dedicated to the unknown:
Across the “road” in the
cemetery there is a flagpole flying an American flag,
with a plaque that states:
Behind the flagpole, facing
the first monument, is a second monument:
“Non minorem laudem exercitus quam ipse imperator meritus videbatur”
erected in grateful memory of their heroic service by Charles Stone.”
