When it comes to census ages, one has to be very careful. But notice the consistency of Enoch's age in the 1850 (34), 1860 (44), 1870 (54), census records. His wife is consistently 10 years older than he, a little unusual, but probably explains why they did not have a very large family.

The 1880 census probably should read age 64 rather than age 84, especially if the ages are to remain consistent. Enoch, at age 64, would still have his wife consistently ten years (eleven) older.

Enoch is definitely NOT a son of Richard Woolsey and Nancy Plumstead, and I am more inclined to believe he is a brother of Aaron T. Woolsey, sons of George Woolsey and Jane Hall.

Aaron T. WOOLSEY b. ca 1819 KY, the one who married Catherine COPENHAVER and then married Ursula GILLILAND, is the son of George and Jane (HALL) WOOLSEY, of Pulaski County, KY.

I had seen other researchers fix him to this family, but wanted either proof or a consensus. Family rumor has it that Aaron had a brother named Enoch, and that his mother was named Jane - that family fits the criteria both ways. The first time that I saw this was from Barbara Olivier, a COPENHAVER / TURPIN researcher.

    Subject: Harrison Lay/ Susan Woolsey

My ancestor, Harrison Lay, married Susan Woolsey in 1839 in Pulaski Co, KY. I have some information about this couple to add if you are interested. I see you have Susan's "Woolseys" all the way back to the 1300s! Unfortunately for me, I am descended from Harrison Lay by his second wife, Nancy Mack Weathers Donaldson. I see you do not have a death date for Susan. This is what I have been trying to find out for a long time. However, I do have other information (dates, places, names of children) that you would be interested in.
    Jeanene Daniels

Harrison Lay was born March 4, 1823 or 25 in Somerset, Pulaski Co, KY, the son of Burrell Lay and Leannah Newell who had each been born in VA and had been married in 1804 in Rockingham County, North Carolina.

Harrison married Susan Woolsey in Pulaski Co on Aug 20, 1839. She had been born in KY, also, probably Pulaski Co. Susan and Harrison were very young to be getting married.

According to the 1850 Pulaski County census, Harrison was born ca 1825 and Susan was born ca 1827 which would make them 14 and 12 when they married. According to the 1860 Lincoln Co MO census, he was born ca 1820 and she was born ca 1822, which would make them 19 and 17 when they got married.
Anyway, I find them in the 1850 Pulaski Co census 123/706/706
Harrison Lay, 25, m, farmer, KY
    Susan Lay, 23, f, KY
    Perry Lay, 6, m, KY
    Libby Lay, 4, f, KY
    Richmond Lay, 2, m, KY
    Jane Lay, 1, f, KY

Apparently, they moved to Lincoln Co MO with Harrison's brother, Cyrennius (or Cyrus) and his family about 1854 and they are found in the
    1860 Lincoln Co, MO - 362/464/464
Harrison Lay, 40, m, Mail carrier KY
    Susan Lay, 38, f, KY
    Anna J. Lay, 19, f, KY
Jefferson P. Lay, 18, farmer, KY
    Elizabeth S. Lay, 15, f, KY
    Richard H. Lay, 13, m, KY
    Andrew J. Lay, 11, m, KY
    Mary Lay, 5, f, MO
    Erasmus Lay, 6/12, m, MO
    Elizabeth (L?) Lay, 3, f, MO
As you can see, the children's names do not exactly match. It is easy to see that:
Perry, 6, and Jefferson P., 18, are probably the same person.
Libby, 4, and Elizabeth S., 15, are probably the same person. Richmond,
2, and Richard H., 13, are probably the same person.

But what about Jane, 1, and Andrew J., 11? I thought perhaps the census taker heard the name wrong in 1850 and it was JAMES and he wrote down JANE and filled the sex in later.

Also, there is this appearance of Anna J. as the oldest child in 1860 when she was not listed in 1850. And Elizabeth (L?), age 3, is older than Erasmus and Mary, although she is listed last.

I think that Jefferson P. (Perry) might have married an Anna J. and this Elizabeth (L?) is their daughter. They would have had to have been 16 and 15 when their daughter was born, but marrying young seems to have run in the family. Also, you would think that Harrison and Susan would not name two daughters Elizabeth, although I have seen such in other families, and as a matter of fact, Harrison had another daughter named Mary - my ancestor, Mary Frances Lay - by his second wife, although she
    was called "Frank."

I think the ages are more likely to be accurate in the earlier census, so it is my recommendation that you list their children as:
Jefferson Perry Lay, born ca 1844 in Pulaski Co KY
Elizabeth S. "Libby" Lay born ca 1846 in Pulaski Co KY
Richmond or Richard H. Lay born ca 1848 in Pulaski Co KY
Andrew J.? or Jane? Lay, born ca 1849 in Pulaski Co KY
Mary Lay, born ca 1855 in Lincoln Co MO
Erasmus, born ca 1859 in Lincoln Co MO

Then you should put a note that two other children were listed in their household in 1860 Lincoln Co MO, Anna J., b ca 1841 in KY and Elizabeth (L?) b ca 1857 in MO, but the relationship to the family has not been established.

Harrison joined the Confederate army in 1862. It's about this time that I lose track of Susan and her children and have not been able to find anything else on them after the 1860 census. I am wondering if Harrison deserted them, or if they were killed in the war or something.

Harrison was wounded in Arkansas, was discharged in April 1865 in Whitburg, Ark (I can't figure out where this is) and married Nancy Mack Weathers Donaldson in Conway Co, Ark in June 1865. She had been married to Napoleon Bonaparte Donaldson and had quite a few children by him, and they were divorced. Napoleon retained custody of all of the children but one. Harrison and Nancy Mack moved back to Lauderdale County, ALabama where Nancy had been born and they are found in the 1880
Lauderdale County AL census. (I have not been able to find them in the 1870 census). They had three daughters:
    1) Lenoria A. Lay b ca 1866 in Arkansas (untraced)
    2) Mary Frances Lay b Jan 28, 1868 in Lauderdale County AL d April 3, 1950 in Lauderdale County AL md Dec 15, 1885 in Lauderdale Co AL Andrew Elvis Grisham b Dec 12, 1859 Lauderdale County, AL d Dec 27, 1948 Lauderdale County, AL. Both are buried in Harvey Cemetery. I have a list of all of their descendants as of 1989.
    3) Sarah B. Lay b ca 1873 in Lauderdale County, AL md Dec 5, 1885 Lauderdale County, AL to R.E.Scoggins. Thought to be one and the same as a Bettie Scoggins listed in the letters of administration of the estate of Bettie Lay, who died in 1917, (Harrison Lay's third wife and widow). This Bettie Scoggins was living in Elkmont, AL in 1917. The above three girls are not Woolsey descendants, but are half-sisters to the children of Susan Woolsey, so it would be interesting to include.

Harrison married Elizabeth "Bettie" McCartney in 1882 and Mary Frances Lay was reared by her aunt, Nancy Mack's sister. Since Nancy was in the 1880 census, this leads me to believe that she died between 1880 and 1882 although I have not found her grave or her date of death.

Harrison died Jan 24, 1909. I have not found his grave, either, although I know that he died at the home of his daughter, Mary Frances, (Mrs. Andrew Grisham) in Lauderdale County, AL.

Anyway, that's about all that I have. I wish that I knew what happened to the children of Susan Woolsey. I am going to keep searching. There was a Perry Lay in pioneer Fresno County, Calif. that I am going to try to find something out about, and there is a family in northeast Alabama that might be connected. I'll have to work on that.

BOOK: Family of George Wood Woolsey & Sarah Nelson by Hester Woolsey Brewer 1939
My father's father, Richard F. Woolsey, died about 1863

"Family of George Wood Woolsey Woolsey Brewer 1939
    & Sarah Nelson by Hester
Ayres, came to Scott County, and that the whole top of his head was bare to the bone from the scalping.
No doubt my father heard these thrilling adventures related often while he was a small boy on his father's land in Pulaski County, Ky., but they apparently made no morbid impression on his mind for throughout his life he retained a very happy disposition. While a small boy, during the sleepy days of school vacation he assisted in the fields, as much as a lad could. In the winter months the children attended classes in the schoolhouse near their home grounds, which was made from logs, and the desks and seats used inside were roughly hewn from trees available in the surrounding woods.
These must have been the days that fostered the happy disposition that remained with my father throughout his life. Though later he #ssumed the responsibility of rearing a large family while combating the hardships of readjustment in other fields, after his ancestors had been of the land -for centuries, it never forsook him.
My father's father, Richard F. Woolsey, died about 1863 at the age of thirty-six. I have found for him no enlistment in the Civil War and have no knowledge of the circumstances that terminated his life while still a young man. After his death the old home in Kentucky was not the same to his widow Arita Osborn, and while Kentucky was suffering from the effects of the war between the North and the South, she with her daughter Nancy and four sons, George, Richard, John and Samuel, left Pulaski County and followed her brother Solomon Osborn to a new home in Indiana. They made this pilgrimage in the year 1863, at the time the big bridge was built across the Ohio at Cincinnati, connecting that city with Covington, Ky.
It seems that many Kentucky families left the state at this time and located in the newer localities of Indiana, Ohio and Illinois. Families depending upon slave labor for the production of crops saw in the future no ray of light when the outcome of the struggle was predicted.-My grandmother, Arita (Osborn) Woolsey, after entering Indiana made her home on land near Cloverdale, and it was here that she with her small children planted the roots for a new home.
