54S. Elizabeth Ellen DRAKE-8560 HIST: Utah Historical Society. Federal Writers' Project. "Mrs. Ellen Woolsey - Pioneer Personal History" [Maurice L. Howe, Ogden, Utah, 1934] Thirty-nine years ago Mrs. Ellen Woolsey of 3227 Washington avenue, became a subscriber to the Ogden Standard-Examiner and she has never taken any other paper since. "I have always liked reading the 'homenews' and news of people know here in Utah besides the dispatches from other cities," said Mrs. Woolsey. "My mother was Jane Persons and when she was only 14 she walked across the plains pushing a handcart in the second company. My father, Orson Drake, came in the third handcart company of pioneers. I was born in Ogden in 1866, in a log house owned by a man named Ferrin on a farm near where the present State School for the Deaf and Blind is located. In 1887 I married William Woolsey. He died 27 years ago. I often think of the hardships of pioneer days. Cloth was very scarce and mother had a spinning wheel. She used to turn the wheel two and a half revolutions to spin one handful of carded wool into yarn. After we had enough yarn we took it to Aunt Hettie (Mahetibel) Bingham who had a loom and she wove the cloth for us. When I was three years old my folks took me down to see the first railroad train come in and I recall even yet how wonderful that 'iron horse' looked." Mrs. Woolsey is the mother of Mrs. Effie Allen, Mrs. Alta Burnham and Don Woolsey, all of Ogden.

His brothers were Thomas older than father. Then Hyrum next to father, James, William. His sisters were Agatha, Rachel, & Sarah. My half brothers names were Hyrum, Thomas, William, George. My full Brothers names are James R., David M., my self and Wilford died in infancy. My Sisters names Sarah Abigail, Melissa, Rachel Emma, Agatha Adeline.

This letter above may clear up some of the problems I have had with Hyrum Woolsey. There were two of them, this one, son of Richard and probably Hannah Foxhall, half - brother of Martin Owen Woolsey, and the older Hyrum, brother of Richard and Thomas Woolsey.

CENSUS: Julian is probably the Julian Woolsey listed in the 1856 census of Provo. He is not listed in the 1860 census with his dad's family. At first I thought that there must be a mistake in the 1856 census because I thought that Julian Woolsey, Male, was possibly Julia Ann Woolsey, but Julia Ann stayed in Illinois, so this must be a male child name Julian. Julian is not a Woolsey name.
