He died on 12 Oct 1802 in Suffield, Hartford, CT. He was buried on 13 Oct 1802 in Suffield, Hartford, CT.

Dr. Alexander King born at Suffield in 1737 [He was a non Dr. who called himself a physician] married, lived and died there in 1802,

He was author in 1796 of a very full genealogical and historical record of the King family of Suffield down to that time, beginning with William Kinge of Ugborough. During all the early years of his life Dr. King was contemporary with four of the children of James King Sr. and was in constant intercourse with them. With William, one of the four, at the time of whose decease, he was 37 years of age he evidently sustained peculiarly intimate relations. For after devoting three pages to an elaborate and somewhat eulogistic sketch of his personal characteristics, and the prominent position, which he occupied in public affairs, he frankly adds. " If after the character I have given Dr. King [in which however I conceive I have not done him justice], I should say I honor and respect his memory for he was my father's and my Best friend. It may perhaps be retorted upon me Proprio laus sordet in ore" [Praise is cheap in one's own mouth].

For many years he represented Suffield in the General Assembly of Connecticut, and in Jan.1788, he was delegate to the Convention held at Hartford to ratify the Constitution of the U.S. He was a selectman for 30 years From December 1774,until his death in 1801. He was the town clerk and in 1799 was ordered by the town "to collect and transcribe all the records of marriage, Births, and deaths into one book". He completed the transcription with an index. This book is now styled " Suffield Records Births Marriages and deaths--Vol. 1"

From the Suffield Library

Dr Alexander King "A prudent and beloved physician", Suffield selectman for 30 years, Town Clerk for twenty-eight, State Representative from 1768 to 1784, built his center chimney home in 1764. It has six fireplaces and 11 rooms. When Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Spencer bought the house in 1910, the found it virtually unaltered. They made repairs, decorated and furnished it and in 1960 gave it to the Suffield Historical Society. The house has 3 main features. The long south porch leading to the Doctor's office is original, The fine corner cupboard in the dining room was probably built by Eliphalet King, Suffield Cabinetmaker, The third feature is the panel painting over the dining room fireplace which is attributed to Carlos, son of Alexander King. Most of the furnishings are 18th and early 19th century. Outstanding collecyions include Bennington pottery, early bottles, and tobacco artifacts as a reminder that the first cigar factory in America was in Suffield in 1810.

Dr. Alexender King, Physician, selectman thirty years, was deputy in the general assembly from June 1768 for many years [in Oct 1772 he and Gideon Granger represented Suffield].

He was Town Clerk from Dec. 1774 to his death

From the Biography of a Town by Robert Hayden Alcorn

" On JULY 4, 1774 a town meeting of the inhabitants of Suffield was called to consider what ought to be done relating to some late Parliamentary Acts by which it is apprehended American Liberty is in Danger. After reading the Boston Port Act; and seriously debating upon the threaring aspect of Public Affairs; Alexender King ESQ, and Messrs Joseph Pease and Gideon Granger were chosen a Committee to draw up some suitable Determinations & Resolves to be laid before the Inhabitants for their acceptance. On the first Monday of August 1774 at 3pm a further Town meeting was called to here the resolve of the Committee. At this town meeting it was voted 1st. We are clearly of the opinion that the late Parliamentary Acts of Granting the East India Company an exclusive right of importing into America upon their own account, subject to a duty upon landing, and of shutting up the port, and the harbor of Boston. As an oppression, and unwarrantable stretch & exertion of the Power, and authority of the British Parliament; and may well alarm the fears and awake the cares of any sober American who has any regard for his own Liberties & Privileges of Posterity.

2nd, Resolved that where the Liberties and Privileges of a people are attacked and in danger, it becomes their indispensable duty to rndevor to defend, and maintain the same by all lawful ways, and means. And we are of the opinion that the best and most probable means for redress of American grievances & burdens occasioned by diverse late acts of the Parliament of Great Britain is, a total suspension of all commercial intercourse with the parent State, during the continuance of said Acts or any

Acts of like nature and tendency.

3rd But whereas it is expected that there will shortly be a Congress of all the American colonies; held at Philadelphia or elsewhere, to consult and devise some general plan to be adopted by the colonies for the security & preservation of their Liberties, Privileges and Freedom. It is unanimously voted and agreed that we will abide by such plan, and the same as we are able to carry into execution; provided it be not inconsistent with our chartered Rights & Privileges, and the unalienable Rights & Privileges we received from the Author of our beings.

4th Resolved that subscriptions be immediately opened for the suffering poor at Boston, who are deprived of the means of subsistence by the operation of the last Boston Port Act; and Messieurs Joseph Pease, Consider Williston, Elihu Kent, Joel Hathaway, Ebenezer King JR., Abraham Granger, Joseph King 2nd, Joseph Norton, Stephen Remington, Capt. John Norton, John Granger, Sheldon Grayham, Joseph Fealing, Gersham Sheldon & Levi Trumble are appointed a Committee to receive

& Transmit to said poor & to their use all that may thus be contributed for their support by their affectionate fellow countrymen in an exigency so pressing as this.

Signed Alexander King, Joseph Pease, Gideon Granger, Committee"

It was a remarkable action for a small settlement like Suffield to take. It was, in effect, an early declaration of independence of incredible foresight and courage. It was a tight group of some thousand, five hundred indignant individuals who were willing to stake everything in defiance of the awesome power of the English Crown. It was a preview of the town's involvement in the Lexington alarm.

On Jan 10,1788 the State convention adopted the New Federal Constitution 128 to 40. Among the negatives were the two Suffield members Alexender King Esq. and David Tod

Then in 1796 we find the names of Gideon King and Zadock Granger who came from Suffield, CT. to King's landing [to what is now Gates,

Monroe Co. N.Y.] and to whom Oliver Phelps had conveyed six thousand acres of land, on the west side of the Genesse River about four miles south of Lake Ontario. Although it was the dead of winter, the King and Granger families set about building several log cabins on the high bank of the river, obtaining the lumber for the roofs and flooring from Allan's mill. In a kind of early day " Kilroy was here " gesture, the lamp bases standing today 1906, in front of Rochester, N.Y. city hall are millstons from Gideon King's gristmill in Suffield, CT.

These then are the first known white men to settle the town of Northampton, N.Y. That they were of courageous stock is evidenced by the fact that in spite of the bitter weather and the so called "Genesse FEAVER " WHICH TOOK THE LIVES OF MANY OF THE EARLY COMERS, THEY STAYED AND PROCEEDED TO FORM THE NUCLEOUS OF OUR TOWN GOVERMENT.

The first town meeting of Northampton, N.Y. was held on April 4, 1797 in the home of Peter Sheffer, Josiah Fish another early settler was elected supervisor and Eli Granger, town clerk.
