3. Nicholas HATHAWAY was born between 1593 and 1595 in Kingscote, Gloucester, England. Nicholas Hathaway, progenitor of the largest branch of Hathaway's in America, was probable son of Thomas and Margaret Hathaway of Kingscote, Glocestershire, England, and probably born abt 1595. His death record has never been found, either in New England or Old England, where some descendants, believed he returned. We have proof he arrived in New England before 24 Feb. 1639, and lived at Braintree [Suffolk deeds 1/28] 14.5 1642 where adjoing lands were described as " between the lands of Hathaway and Daniel Lovell" He was not on the list of men at Plymouth Colon able to bear arms in 1643. He may have had several children, including Jacob and Joseph, but certainly had son John. He was married to Mrs. Nicholas HATHAWAY about 1627 in England. He lived in what is called the farms then part of Taunton now part of Berkley. 5. John HATHAWAY JR. was born on 16 Aug 1650 in Taunton, Bristol, Mass. He died in Jun 1730 in Freetown or Dighton, Mass. His Will is dated 23 May 1723, bequeathed half the iron works to his son Jacob and the other half to his son Isaac. His Will proved 11 Jun 1730. He had received 18th lot in Freetown from his father, located about a mile below Assonet Village on Fall River Rd only 100 rods wide at the Rd. but extended about 4 miles to the river. He was a Selectman for 12 years. John Hathaway and Shadrack Wilbore witnessed Walter Deane's will 1716, [Amer. Gen. Vol. 23, p176]. History of Dighton, 1962, p. 148ff, states that John Hathaway and Thomas Coram chose the spot on the west side of the river for their shipyard as early as 1693, and built houses side by side; after 10 years Coram returned to England and left John Hathaway with the business. A lawsuit involved 2 ships completed one fully rigged and ready for sea. A Lisc. Innkeeper 5 June 1684. He married [1st] in 1668 Hannah Burt, also called Anna. Church [now Unitarian Church Dighton], spent most of his life on a farm in what is now Berkley; for 35 years served as Town Clerk of Taunton, one of the finest penman of New England. As a soldier in King Phillips war he served in Capt. Daniel Henchman's Co. July attack on Mt. Hope. The following year under Capt. Samuel Wadsworth. Member of the militia 8 April in King William's war, 1691, under Capt. Thomas Leonard; and 1st military co. of Taunton 4th squadron of Taunton. Son Abraham as heir in 1737 received land in Narragansett, Township #4 later Greenwich, Mass. now under the Quabbli Reservoir, for that service. Ref. Isaac inherited the Iron forge at Bleachery Pond from John his father and the land west of the pond to the Taunton great river from Thomas Makepeace. No descendent has apparently joined the Society of Colonial wars but listed in 1690 inspection returns. A certain piece of land that was set off in ye division of ye estate to my honored Mother Margret Hathaway late of Berkley Deceased as her dower. The Babbitt Gen. and other sources say she married 2nd Edward Babbitt. We believe this to be incorrect. Taunton deeds [25-208] 25 Oct 1735/6 sold for 900 pounds to Eb of Freetown land which my honored father Abraham gave to me by his last will and testament, and which I bought from my brothers, Benjamin, Samuel, and Eleazer, 95 acres more or less etc. Narragansett Soldiers records at Quabbin show that Abraham Hathaway was an actual settler, 5 Dec. 1739, but his name is not included in the 1740 list. Not obliged to settle and are to pay 5 pounds to him to settle lots adjoining to Hatfield mentions Hatfield's northwest corner at 2nd branch of Westfield River. [Ashfield] George Madison Bodge's Soldiers in King Philips war, 1896, page 51 begins list of soldiers under Captain Henchman. And on page 52 Abraham Hathaway 02.07.00 and again page 221 02.08.00, and on page 428, grantee in Narraganset No. 4, now Greenwich, Mass. Under the influence of the Evangelist Rev. John T. Avery, he came into the Christian life, and went to Oberlin college as a student with a view of preparing himself for the ministry. He left Oberlin, probably in 1854, to become secretary and Treasurer of Hillsdale College, Hillsdale, Mich. which position he held for a number of years, doing some teaching also in connection with his office work. He was then appointed Cashier of the First National Bank of Hillsdale, Mich. and in the early 70's he accepted appointment as U.S. Indian agent at Leech Lake Minnesota, where he remained until 1884. Shortly after he removed to Oberlin, Ohio where he remained until his death. The central work of his life was no doubt done during the 20 years at Hillsdale, Mich. where he was a very influential factor in both college and town affairs.
