Society Holdings.
There are a surprising number of original Wynkoop memoirs, photographs, manuscripts, documents, letters, property deeds, land grants, grocery bills and official correspondence still in existence but scattered in a wide variety of locations throughout the United States and the Netherlands. Some of these records date back to the early 1600s and range all the way up through the early part of the twentieth century. The largest portion of these holdings cover the period from 1700 to 1900. I've been through quite a few of these collections and done some of this cataloging myself. I have also had help, however, from some other very dedicated people, notably Mark Major, [email protected], the Asst. Treasurer of the Historical Society of Schuylkill County in Pottsville, Pa., and from Orlando A. Romero, F.A.C. History Library Director at the Museum of New Mexico in Santa Fe, NM. This is not to slight the many librarians, researchers and archivists that I've been in touch with around the country in one way or another. I've met and corresponded with an enormous number of very special people over the last couple of years. This work would not have been possible without their very substantial help. What you see before you, however, is only the start of this extremely large project. It is my intention to catalog and record here as many collections of Wynkoop material as I can find over the coming years. This is not a project I can do by myself. There are an enormous number of local Historical Societies and Genealogical Societies located around the United States that I simply can not get to. And that doesn't even begin to cover the Netherlands. Koen Wijnkoop [email protected] has made a good start at collecting document numbers for early Wijnkoop/Wijncoop material at the Gemeente Archief in Amsterdam and Gert van Winkoop [email protected] in Putten has done some major research in the province of Gelderland and hopefully can be prevailed upon to work up an inventory of van Winkoop/Wijnkoop material in the Putten/Eede area of Gelderland, where apparently Cornelius Evertsz. Wijnkoop came from originally. This is where the rest of you can help. There are Wynkoops in almost all fifty States of the Union, not to mention the rest of the world. I'm looking for volunteers to catalog the Wynkoop related documents in the historical and genealogical societies in the areas where you live and do your research. The size of the collection doesn't matter; whether it be large or small, any contribution will be welcome indeed. I'm interested in material that runs the gamut from bible records to tax records, anything that can shed more light on the Wynkoop family. A full catalog of Wynkoop documents will provide an invaluable resource in the future for family members trying to solve those nagging family mysteries that have eluded researchers for generations. I would ask that you be as specific as possible in describing these documents. Please record as much of the following information as possible when cataloging a collection:
This may be the most important work we accomplish here at the Research Library. To the best of my knowledge, no project like this has ever been attempted before for any family, much less the Wynkoops. Won't you join us in this historic attempt. That vital clue that someone needs may be resting silently in the small historical society just down the street from you. Family documents have been passed down from generation to generation and may be hundreds or even thousands of miles now from their point of origin. Help us to piece the family history back together again and make it whole. Chris
