5th South Carolina Cavalry
Company K
Mountain Rangers

This company was raised mainly in Spartanburg, Union, and York Districts, although men from Newberry and Laurens Districts are also known to have served in it. The commander was Joseph Gist Harlan (1822-1884), a planter and mechanic from Unionville, who had served previously as first sergeant, Co. D, Hampton Legion Bn. SC Cavalry. The company was mustered into Confederate service at Columbia, SC, on 30 December 1862, as Harlan's Co. SC Cavalry.
