Barton upon Irwell hamlet or village developed north of acrossing over the River Irwell, within the area of what became EcclesBorough. The name
"Barton" or "Barton upon Irwell" has been used for a number oflocal government areas. During the Middle Ages there are references tolands in the

IRWELL TOWNSHIP In the northern Dart of this township, theBarton, Eccles, Winton and Monton Local Board of Health wasestablished in 1854
and, 'with the addition of a very small part of Worsley township,the area of this Local Board largely became in 1892 that of EcclesBorough; for this
area and Barton upon Irwell hamlet see ECCLES. For Barton Mosscivil parish, formed from the area of Barton upon Irwell township in1894, and for

BARTON UPON IRWELL RURAL DISTRICT
This was established in 1894 and was in Lancashire. It comprisedthe townships or civil parishes of Barton Moss, Clifton, Davyhulme andFlixton.
For these areas see BARTON MOSS, CLIFTON, etc. The Rural Districtwas dissolved in 1933.
BARTON UPON IRWELL TOWNSHIP
This township or civil parish was in Lancashire. It was in Ecclesecclesiastical parish. It was in Chorlton poor law Union, 1841-49, andin Barton upon
Irwell poor law Union, 1849-1894. In 1854 the Barton, Eccles,Winton and Monton Local Board of Health was established for thenorthern part of the
township. In 1892 there was an exchange of areas (Davyhulme area)with Pendleton township. In 1892 the Local Board was succeeded byEccles
Borough. The area of Barton upon Irwell township included inEccles Borough in 1892 was largely the same as had been included inthe area of the
former Local Board; in addition, a very small part of Worsleytownship was included in Eccles Borough in 1892. In 1894 Barton uponIrwell township
was dissolved (though see also WORSLEY for a declaration made in1921) and its area divided between Eccles Borough, Irlam UrbanDistrict and
Barton Moss and Davyhulme townships. For these areas seerespectively Eccles IRLAM etc. For the "vill" of Barton or Barton uponIrwell see

A brief check of our 'Calendars of Prisoners' for Lancashire QuarterSessions, Reference QJC 2 & 3 has revealed that on the third June1833, Salford Session, a Joseph Smith was found guilty of stealing atBarton-upon-Irwell, one handkerchief and other articles, the propertyof Margaret Hancock - Transported for 7 years.
No mention was found of a Maria Bohanna(n) in 1837. However, if shewas
convicted at Liverpool Borough Sessions, then the Liverpool RecordOffice may be able to help you, as I believe they may hold recordsrelating to Liverpool Borough Sessions. Their email address [email protected]

He was transported on the fifth voyage of the "John I". The ship'smaster was John Robson and it sailed from Spithead on the 6-AUG-1833arriving in Tasmania on 1-DEC-1833 (sources Mitchell Library F148,Surgeon Arthur Savage's Journal ML MFR 1399. Tas State Lib Records saysee ML MS No A1059(7) p287).
His convict number was 1776. He was 17 years old when convicted3-JUN-1833 in Manchester. His crime is not known at present.
He used the alias Joseph SMITH during his convict days (his nameJoseph SMITH has an annotation below it saying "proper name Baxter")and following his release and subsequent marriage in 1840 he used asecond alias of John PAXTON. This second alias is clearly shown in thebirth records of Elizabeth PAXTON - she was baptised Elizabeth BAXTERwith her father being John BAXTER but in the Tasmainian civil birthregistrations she was Elizabeth PAXTON and he was John PAXTON.
The irony is that Pa's (Arthur YOUNG) mother Elizabeth Paxton ALLENwas given her grandmother's surname PAXTON which we now knoworiginated as an alias for BAXTER.
He was aged 22 and was a "Free-Carpenter". She was a 19 year oldconvict. Both were single. The marriage was performed by L. Gibbon,minister and witnessed by William Jones.
At the time of writing (9-APR-1999), I believe that John Paxton usedthe name "Joseph Smith" as an alias. The reason for this is asfollows:
(a) Their first child, John, was born the following year and thefather was registered as John Paxton (LAUNCESTON/1841/715). The motherwas recorded as Maria Bahanan.
(b) John Paxton was registered as the father of their next twochildren - an unnamed male birth registration (LAUNCESTON/1843/1531)and Elizabeth's baptism record, although he used the name John BAXTERon her birth registration (LAUNCESTON/1845/943). Maria's maiden namewas recorded as Bohanan in these records, clearly linking all of theevents. Interestingly enought, Elizabeth herself used BAXTER as hermaiden surname in her first marriage to James CREAHAN.
(c) In all records, his occupation was consistently listed ascarpenter.
(d) His age from his convict and marriage records are compatible.
This is now confirmed. A 'Permission to Marry' for Joseph SMITH andMaria BOHANNA was found confirming that Joseph SMITH was a convict(#1776, Ship John (2)). Joseph SMITH's convict record indicates heused the alias BAXTER. After he was released he used the name JohnPAXTON, although on Elizabeth PAXTON's birth registration the surnameBAXTER is used. Through her life, Elizabeth used BAXTER from time totime.
