Her marriage to "Joseph Smith" in 1840 at the age of 19 and herconvict assignment record from 1837 showing she was 16 years old,indicates she was born around 1821.
Her death certificate shows she as born in Liverpool, ENGLAND around1821/ 1822.

The trail information details from the trail are as follows:
Eliza Fisher, Ann Dodd and Maria Bohanna werev tried on 10-JAN-1837,being accused of stealing "one piece of the current Gold Coin of therealm called a sovereign of the value of one pound. Three other piecesof current Gold Coin called half sovereigns of the value of tenshillings each and one pocket book to the value of one penney of themonies, goods and chattels of Owen Morris".
The prosecuting attorney was G. W. Crooke.
On the right corner a handwritten note states "all to be transportedfor seven years".

She was 16 years old and was convicted at Liverpool, January 1837 for"stealing from person". For this she was sentenced for 7 years. Herassignment record indictes she was single at the time, could read butnot write and the gaoler's report said she was "orderly in prison".
The "Platina", 303 tons, sailed 3-MAY-1837 from London, arriving atTasmania 22-OCT-1837. According to the Hobart Town Courier, on boardwere 113 female prisoners and 11 children. The ship's master wasRobson Coltish and the surgeon was George Ellery Forman (the recordscan be found at the Mitchell Library A1059(8) p656, including thesurgeon's journal ML MFR 3207, ADM 101/50. The Tasmanian State Librarysays also see ML MS No A1059(8) p549, ML(1836-8) p119).

[546] The informant for the certificate was James PAXTON her son. The lengthof her illness was reported to be one month and she died of heartdiease and dropsy. Her medical attendant was Dr Service.

This marriage is registered between Joseph Smith and Maria Bohannah.It was carried out according to the "rites and ceremonies of theUnited Church of England and Ireland by Banns with the consent ofGovernment".
He was aged 22 and was a "Free-Carpenter". She was a 19 year oldconvict. Both were single. The marriage was performed by L. Gibbon,minister and witnessed by William Jones.
At the time of writing (9-APR-1999), I believe that John Paxton usedthe name "Joseph Smith" as an alias. The reason for this is asfollows:
(a) Their first child, John, was born the following year and thefather was registered as John Paxton (LAUNCESTON/1841/715). The motherwas recorded as Maria Bahanan.
(b) John Paxton was registered as the father of their next twochildren - an unnamed male birth registration (LAUNCESTON/1843/1531)and Elizabeth's baptism record, although he used the name John BAXTERon her birth registration (LAUNCESTON/1845/943). Maria's maiden namewas recorded as Bohanan in these records, clearly linking all of theevents. Interestingly enought, Elizabeth herself used BAXTER as hermaiden surname in her first marriage to James CREAHAN.
(c) In all records, his occupation was consistently listed ascarpenter.
(d) His age from his convict and marriage records are compatible.
This is now confirmed. A 'Permission to Marry' for Joseph SMITH andMaria BOHANNA was found confirming that Joseph SMITH was a convict(#1776, Ship John (2)). Joseph SMITH's convict record indicates heused the alias BAXTER. After he was released he used the name JohnPAXTON, although on Elizabeth PAXTON's birth registration the surnameBAXTER is used. Through her life, Elizabeth used BAXTER from time totime.

The marriage certificate gives almost no information about the brideand groom. Using this information one cannot say absolutely that theMaria PAXTON on the certificate is Maria BOHANNA. However, her deathcertificate links all this together showing her first marriage to JohnPAXTON (alias John BAXTER) and her second marriage to John Robson.
They were married in the Presbyterian Church by Alexr S PENNYCOOK. Thewitnesses were John and Margaret SULTER.
