1. Richard POWELL was christened in 1729 in Bonavista, Bonavista Bay, Nfld.

General Notes: From Charles Powell Feb 2011:

Powell is one of those names that is derived from Howell or Hywel. Maybe you already know this but the Welsh used an 'ap' or 'ab' prefix the way the Irish and Scots used Mc and Mac to mean 'son of'. The earliest Powell spelling would be 'ap-Hywel' or 'ap-Howell' and was in use quite far back (i.e. 1500's or earlier), just meaning the son of some guy named Howell. This eventually got shortened to Powel (the Welsh spelling only uses one L at the end). There are likely dozens and dozens of unrelated Powell lines the world over. My current best guess on our own Powell line is that we would have came from Devon or Dorset England, but may have come from Wales previous to that (i.e. moving from Wales to England in the early 1700's or before). Because of the timeframe of Powell records found in Bonavista and Trinity, it is just a statistical likelihood that we came from Devon, Dorset, or Somerset since practicaly everyone coming to NL in those years were from these areas. There is a decent book out there by W. Gordon Handcock called "Soe Longe as There Comes Noe Women" that discusses the patterns of emmigration to NL in the early years. There is little specific info in there on Powell's but it is an interesting read on general history and population statistics for those early days.

11. Robert POWELL was christened in 1784 in Bonavista, Bonavista Bay, Nfld.

General Notes: Robert and Elizabeth lived in Tickle Cove, B. B., NF in the 1820's.

It is believed that all of the Powell's in Happy Adventure are descended from Robert Powell and Elizabeth Jane Taylor (Hedley's great-grandparents) , who baptised several children in Bonavista in 1811, including Hedley's grandfather Robert 'Junior'. It's a little confusing, but Hedleys father (married Naomi Samson), grandfather (married Ann Hancock), and great-grandfather (married Elizabeth Jane Taylor) were all named Robert. There are still a number of Powell's on the Bonavista Peninsula that would have descended split off from our tree quite early. I have not met or made contact with many from that side, other than a couple of researchers in the US who would be our forth or fifth cousins or more.

There is a fairly convoluted trail from Bonavista to Happy Adventure, with several stops at other communities around the bay.

Robert married Elizabeth Jane TAYLOR Powell on 22 Oct 1805 in Bonavista, Bonavista Bay, Nfld. Elizabeth died in 1865 in Barrow Harbour, Nfld.

General Notes: From Charles Powell Feb 2011:

There is a fairly convoluted trail from Bonavista to Happy Adventure, with several stops at other communities around the bay. There are also a few Powell's around King's Cove (near Bonavista) that sometimes get confused with 'our crowd'. These were Irish Catholics who came to the area much later.

There is also a long-standing Powell line in Carbonear area that traces back to the 1700's as well. I have not found a link to these people so far, and there may not be one.

At time of marriage Robert was listed from Tickle Cove. Robert moved to Barrow Harbour and then to Happy Adventure in the mid 1800's.

From Ivan Powell: One of the males from this family either William or James was swept overboard from a schooner in Labrador and his body was never found. What year we are not sure.

General Notes: Hedley Powell was from Bonavista Bay. He worked in logging camps as a logger and a cook in Norris Arm and Badger until he met and married Elizabeth Watkins and moved to Grand Falls. Witness at their wedding was a T.Watkins and Theresa Elson. He started working in the mill in Grand Falls in 1909 when it opened. In those days the mill was owned by the Anglo Newfoundland Development Company. In the 1921 Newfoundland census Hedley is listed as a millwright. Joyce remembers he worked long hours as a rigger and millwright in the mill. The family lived on Beaumont Avenue.

From Charles Powell:

Hedley was my grandmother Barbara's brother. I was named after their brother Charles. I have Hedley's birth date as Oct 10, 1884 from a baptism record found in the Musgravetown church records. I remember my grandmother mentioning Hedley a few times but it was so long ago and I was so young that I can't remember any real details.

I've a tree for all of Hedley's siblings and parents. I've gotten it a few more generations back from that to the town of Bonavista itself, but no further with any certainty. I am doubtful about both the Nova Scotia to Newfoundland idea and the Welsh miners idea, but you never know.

Hedley married Elizabeth WATKINS Powell,4 daughter of Samuel WATKINS and Phoebe ANSTEY Watkins, on 7 Nov 1905 in Norris Arm, Newfoundland. Elizabeth was born on 30 Aug 1887 in Indian Cove, Twillingate, Nfld and died about 1985 in Grand Falls, Nfld aged about 98.

General Notes: From her Memorial: Kathleen (Kate) Elizabeth Hanrahan
Born in Brown's Arm, Newfoundland and formerly a resident of Badger, Norris Arm, and Grand Falls, Kathleen has called Gander home since 1947. A pioneer of Grand Falls and Gander, Kathleen (Kate) Elizabeth Hanrahan is the oldest of 13 children born to Hedley and Elizabeth Powell. Her father, Hedley was born in Happy Adventure, Bonavista Bay and her mother Elizabeth (nee Watkins) was born in Indian Cove on New World Island.
Kathleen was born March 30, 1906 when Sir Wilfred Laurier was Prime Minister of Canada and Sir Robert Bond was the Prime Minister of Newfoundland. A short time later, her family moved to Norris Arm, as her grandfather and father had a sawmill there. In 1914 her family moved to Badger. She knew the men mentioned in the famous song "The Badger Drive" - Ron Kelly, Bill Dorothey and Mr Cole. In 1918 her father went to work as a millwright in Grand Falls, so the family which now included six children, moved again and Kathleen finished school there in 1922. Her first job was in the Allied Candy Store on High Street in Grand Falls. Her starting salary was $12 per month and for that she was required to work nine hours per day, six days per week.
While working at the Candy Store she caught the eye of Gerald Hanrahan, a young veteran of World War I from St. John's who was working as a barber in the new town of Grand Falls. He would come into the store to buy cigarettes. One day Jerry, as he was known, came over to her at a garden party in Grand Falls and presented her with a feather which said, "Tickled to Meet You". He introduced himself and they took a walk together.
They were married at Wesley United Church in St. John's in 1926. At the time of her marriage Kathleen worked at Royal Stores in Grand Falls. When the management learned that she was married she was laid off because married women weren't allowed to work (for wages).
Throughout the rest of the 1920s, the 1930s and through the war, the family lived and grew in Grand Falls. Their first child, Gerald Patrick, was born in 1927 on her birthday. Two years later Joan was born. David came along in 1939. The 1940s brought Gert and Don.
After World War II the great news was that Gander was being built up around the airport with great opportunities. So in 1947 Jerry and Kathleen and their family moved to Gander where Jerry opened a Barber Shop.
Jerry passed away in 1958, the same year they moved in a new home on Earhart Street where she still lived. After Jerry's death she worked as a telephone operator at the RCAF Stations and CNT. She retired at the age of 66.
Inher lifetime she had travelled to many places. She was on the first Air Canada 747 flight from Toronto to Vancouver. She had been to Germany, France, Holland, England, Los Angeles, Oklahoma City, Texas, Mexico, New York, Florida, Boston, Nova Scotia, PEI, New Brunswick and all over Newfoundland.
She always kept busy with knitting, crochet, cooking, baking, crosswords, serving tea to her friends, and talkiing on the phone.
Her greatest source of enjoyment was her family, her many friends, her faith and open line shows, which she never missed. Her family agrees she was a wonderful mother, mother-in-law, grandmother and great grandmother.
