of Schuylkill County
Samuel Edgar Behler was born in Mahanoy City, Pennsylvania on February 28, 1899. He was the youngest of two sons born to Samuel B. Behler and Ida Amelia Bittner. Samuel Edgar lived with his parents in North Union Twp. from 1900 - 1911. Around 1911/12 his father bought a farm on Schmaltzdahl Road, New Ringgold, Pennsylvania from Benjamin Sassaman. This farm was down the road from the Paul Farm where his future wife Emily was born and raised. The Behler family was not new to East Brunswick Twp. at the time the farm was bought. Three generations of Behler's had lived in the West Penn and East Brunswick area and Samuel B. had spent his first 21 years on his father's farm which was also in East Brunswick. Samuel Edgar grew up helping his father on the farm and learning the carpenters trade from his father. He married Emily Paul in 1919 and the couple lived at Emily's parents home until the death of Samuel B. in 1925, at which time, Samuel Edgar and Emily moved their family to the Behler farm. Samuel Edgar worked this farm as well as practicing the carpenters trade until 1941 when the family moved to New Jersey where Samuel took a job with the railroad.
Samuel Edgar Behler married
Emily Cecelia Paul in 1919.
They were married in McKeansburg by Rev. William Gangloff.
Samuel was 20 and Emily was 18.
The couple would have a total of nine children over the next 20 years, all born in East
Brunswick, Twp., Schuylkill Co., Pennsylvania. Here the family posed for a photo
taken sometime in the early 30's. Standing in the back from left to right are, Betty, Mildred, Robert, Jean, and

after this photo was taken the family would move to Lake Hopatcong, New Jersey.
