CHARLES AMONE

(Spelling taken from marriage record)

According to the death record of Charles, he was born 10 Mar 1837 in Quebec, Canada. I cannot confirm that date at this time for I have not found a christening record. According to oral family accounts, Charles is supposed to be the oldest in the Francois Amans family. However, on an 1861 Canadian census he was listed as being age 21, which would make him born about 1840. On the same 1861 Canadian census his sister, Isabelle, is listed as being age 26. If this is true, Charles is not the oldest in the family. However, until I find a christening record I will use 1837 as his birth year, based on his death certificate.

On 9 Sep 1857, Charles married Marie Georgina Bourke (Bourque) in Princeville, Arthabaska, Quebec, Canada. His marriage record is in the St. Eusebe Parish Church records. A son, Charles Francois, was born 9 Oct 1858. His birth record is at the St. Patrice Parish, in Tingwick, Arthabaska, Quebec, Canada. A daughter, Marie Amebella, was born 25 Sep 1860, also in Tingwick. On 15 Jan 1863 an infant son was born but was buried the next day, 16 Jan 1863, in St. Patrice Cemetery.

On an 1861 Canadian census, Tingwick, Arthabaska, Quebec, Canada I found the following names and spellings:
Charles Amond ----------------- Age 21 ------ Farmer
Charles Amond ----------------- Age 2
Georginia Bourke (Amond) ------ Age 24
Amebella Amond ---------------- Age 1

On this census it states that Charles had 50 acres of land with 4 acres cultivated, 2 acres in crops, 2 acres in pasture, 46 acres in wood or wild with a cash value of $250.00.

In October of 1863, about one year before his parents died, 27 year old Charles and his family emigrated to the United States, landing at the Port of Detroit in Michigan. On his Declaration of Oath of Intent, filed in Dunn County Wisconsin 15 June 1869, he stated he was born in Canada about 1838. He became a citizen of the United States on 6 Sep 1875 in Barron County, Wisconsin. A newspaper obituary indicates his wife, Marie Georgina, "was one of the first white settlers in Barron County."

On an 1870 Federal census in Barron, Barron, Wisconsin I found the following:
Charles --------- 31 --------- Born Can
Georgina -------- 33 --------- Born Can
Charles --------- 10 --------- Born Can
Noah (Louis) ---- 2--------- Born Mich
James Frederick- 1 month ------ Born Wis
No mention was made of Amebella who would have been 8 or 9 yrs. old by then.

Other census records show other children born to Charles and Georgina were: Alfred (Fred) in 1871 and Mathilda 1872. Alfred apparently died before the age of 4 because an 1875 Wisconsin State census listed Charles' family as 4 males and 3 females.

I do not have a death record for Georgina. On an 1880 Federal Census, Stanfield, Barron, Wisconsin, Charles appears with a new wife, Emily Peltier. I do not have a record of Charles and Emily's marriage. On this 1880 census were:
Charles --------------------- 40 --------- Born Can
Emily (Wife) ---------------- 25 --------- Born Can
Charles (Son) --------------- 21 --------- Born Can
(Noah) Louis (Son) ---------- 12 --------- Born Wis
(James) Frederick (Son) ----- 10 --------- Born Wis
Mathilda (Dau) -------------- 8--------- Born Wis
Mary (Dau) ------------------ 6--------- Born Wis
Joseph (Son) ---------------- 4--------- Born Wis
Angeline (Dau) -------------- I--------- Born Wis
Adeline (Dau-in-law) -------- 19 --------- Born Can
Mary (Gr-Dau) -------------- 3\12 -------- Born Wis

According to the records I have, I know Mathilda was a daughter of Charles and Georgina and Angeline was a daughter of Charles and Emily. I have been unable to determine whether Georgina or Emily was the mother of Mary (born abt. 1874) and Joseph (born abt. 1876).

Charles and his family were also on an 1885 and 1895 Wisconsin State census in Stanfield, Barron, Wisconsin. These census records only listed the number of males and the number of females.

The records I have found show the children of Charles and Emily to be:
Angeline --------------- Born 11 Oct 1879
Marie Anabella --------- Born 16 Jan 1881
Exceldia (Philomene)---Born 7 Apr 1883
Marie Albina ----------- Born 25 Jun 1885
Francis (Frank) Paul --- Born 18 Sep 1887
Alexander Joseph ------- Born 19 Jan 1890
Emily died 21 May 1892 at the age of 39.

I have not found Charles and his family on the 1900 or 1910 Federal census records or the 1905 Wisconsin State Census.

Charles died 24 Dec 1919 of heart problems at the home of his son Charles Amans Jr. He was 82 years old and was buried next to Emily in the Dobie Cemetery, which is located a few miles from Rice Lake, Wisconsin.
