The HARRILL Family of Keynsham, Somerset, England ...

Henry Brown, son of William Brown and Deborah Worgan, had been born in Brislington on 6 February 1749. In 1781 he was married at Keynsham, Gloucestershire, England:

Henry BROWN, bachelor of Brislington, married Betty HARRIL, spinster, of this parish, by licence, 26 Jan 1781, at Keynsham.

Betty HARRILL or HARRIL is recorded on various family trees as having been born in 1750, died 1809. The source of this information is not known. Nor are her parents known. She does not appear to be buried at St Lukes, Brislington although her husband Henry is buried there. Betty would have been 59 years old when she died.

Henry died on 23 December 1834, aged 85 years. If the above is correct he died 30 years after his wife, Betty.

By 1809, the year she is thought to have died, Betty and Henry Brown had had nine children, all of whom survived to adulthood. William and Mary Ann were the only ones who did not marry.

Deborah 1786

Seeking Descendants?

A broad outline of the family and descendants of Henry Brown and Betty Harrill, with links to other pages with further details, is as follows:

1. William Brown. Born ? 1783, died 11 April 1839 (aged 56) and buried in Parish Church of St Luke, Brislington, Bristol, England.

2. John Brown. Born 1784 in Brislington, Somerset, England. Died 16 July 1851 (aged 67). Buried in Parish Church of St Luke. He was an architect, surveyor 1824, land surveyor; gentleman 1825. He married Mary Cater, daughter of John Wyatt Cater & Mary Fisher, on 12 May 1813 in Holy Trinity, Stapleton, Gloucestershire, England. They lived at Kensington House, near Brislington. Their family is briefly described on the Brown Cater page and you will find more about the Cater family on Marion's site.

I will create another page for the Cater family but Mary was born ? February 1784 and died 8 April 183129 in Barbados, West Indies (but at sea). She was buried at St Michael's Barbados, West Indies. Marion Lowe's pages re the Caters are of interest.

3. Deborah Brown. Born about 1786. Died 5 October 1833 (aged 47) and buried in Parish Church of St Luke, Brislington, England. Deborah married Jonathan Grigg, son of William Grigg & Ann Delver, 17 June 1811 in Parish Church of St Luke, Brislington.

4. Henry Brown. Born 1787. Was of St Anne's, Brislington, Somerset, England. Buried in the churchyard of the Parish Church of St Luke, Brislington, Bristol, England. Occupation Yeoman 1813; farmer 1814, 1821..

He married Ann Edgell on 11 June 1812 in St. John, Bedminster, Somerset, England. She died on 13 September 1849 in Swindon, Wiltshire, England. In the Sydney Morning Herald of 16 January 1850 the following was announced:

Ann Brown wife of Henry Brown of St Anne's, Brislington, Somerset, died 13.9.1849 at the residence of her son-in-law (not named) at Swindon, Wiltshire.

I would love to know whether any of Henry and Ann's children came to Australia. Those children were:

Henry Brown
John Edgell Brown (infant)
Frederic Brown
Edgar Brown
Albert Brown
Oswald Brown (infant)
Frederick Brown
Barbara Ann Brown
Susannah Matilda Brown
Oswald Brown
Mary Ann Brown
William Brown

5. Mary Ann Brown. Born 3 April 1788. Died on 9 June 1875 in Brislington (never married). She is buried at the Parish Church of St Luke, Brislington. The index to the 1851 census for the North Somerset, in particular Brislington village, lists only three Browns living in Brislington at the time. One is Mary A. aged 62, 1944, 4a, page 21 and another was Elizabeth aged 14 years. Census was taken on 30 March 1851.

6. James Brown. Born 1790 but nothing more is known of him. He married Sarah Lane, before 1812 and they had children:

Sarah Brown
Ann Brown
Frederick Brown
Emma Brown
Eliza Brown
Chas Brown
Morgan Brown

Handwritten notes in family papers say James's descendants were represented by Fred Brown's family, Annie, Emma, etc.but with no information as to who they may be. I cannot find the births of any of these children on British Isles VRI. Nor are they on the IGI Custom Search page as at 12/2000. In 1828, when their daughter Sarah died, James and his wife Sarah were living in the City of Bristol.

7. Nathaniel Brown. Born before May 1791 in Brislington, Somerset, England. Baptised 12 May 1791 in the Parish Church of St Luke. At one stage he was a Collector of Poor Rates. The GLS marriage index indicates that Nathaniel Brown, of St. Mary Redcliffe, married Elizabeth Grigg, of this parish, by licence, on 3 Dec 1814 at St. Mary le Port, Bristol. Their children were:

Nathaniel
Elizabeth (Bessie)

8. Sarah (Ann?) Brown. Born ? 1792. The Bishops Transcripts for the Parish Church of St Luke, Brislington record her marriage:

Robert Lindon COLLINGS, bachelor, of the Parish of North Petherton, Somerset, bachelor, married Sarah BROWN, spinster, of this parish, in this church, by licence, 26 May 1831

They were married by Charles Ranken. Both signed. Robert was the son of John Collings & Elizabeth Lindon. Their known children were:

Francis Henry Collings
Edwin John Collings

Click here for a page on the Collings family.

9. Edward Brown. Baptised on 20 March 1793 in Parish Church of St Luke, Brislington. Edward died on 18 June 1860 (aged 67) and is buried in St Lukes Churchyard. He was a Commission Agent. The index to Gloucester marriages 1813-1837 states that Edward Brown of St Michael, Gloucester married Mary Ann Washbourne after licence 22 March 1822. As far as we know they had two children:

Henry Hall (or Hale) Brown
Mary Ann Brown

A mysterious note in family papers says next to Edward's name "Browns of New York. Edmonds & Muellets" .. or " Edmonds and Muellers" or "Edwards and Muellers"! What does this mean? Do we have a branch of the Brown family in the USA?

Mandy and I have been searching for a number of years now for a connection between our Harrill ancestors. We are confident that one exists but haven't been able to pinpoint it so if any reader can help with further information regarding any of the people mentioned on this chart we would love to hear from you.
