1655, His name is in the list of Freemen at this date; there being ninety-six persons named. In the same year there was a Richard Carder enrolled as Freeman of Warwick, but there is not any known connection between these families. Richard Carder was early of Roxbury, Mass. (1636), thence went to Portsmouth, R. I. (1638), joining the Warwick settlers a few years later. At the time of the Indian war he went to Newport like many other settlers and there he died in 1676. He made a will to which his widow Mary alludes in her own will of a few years later, which she made at Warwick. His children were: John, Susannah, Sarah, Mary, James, born 1655, 5, 2, Joseph, born 1659, of whom the last named died at Boston, 1694, 3, 14. The similarity of names, Richard Card of Newport and Richard Carder of Warwick (and both Freemen in 1655), would almost lead to the conclusion that one of the individuals was parent to the other, but it does not appear by the records that any relation whatever existed, and it is noticeable that the word Sen'r or Jr. is not affixed to either name in the Freemen's Roll."²⁵⁸ He removed to Boston from Roxbury on 25 May 1636.⁶¹ He "As a support. of the pestilent heresies of Wheelwright and Hutchinson, he was disfranchis. in 1637, and went to R. I. was one of the eighteen orig. purch. of the beautif. isl. of Aquedneck, and partner in the eivil compact. In 1643 he was engag. in the purch. of Warwick with Gorton and others, and for sustain. his and their right was made prison. with all the the rest, brot. to Boston, and sentenc. to be incare. at oxbury, in irons (when the opin. of the rev. elders, that their offence deserv. death, was overrul.), not to depart on pain of death. See Winth. I. 248, II. 121, 48. Glad eno. was the governm. to disch. him and his fellow-suffer. next yr. with sentence of banishm. on pain of forfeit. life for coming back. He was quiet at W. 1655, had John; Sarah; James, b. 2 May 1655; Mary; and Joseph; perhaps was an Assist. 1665, and d. at Newport in the time of Philip's war 1675 or 6, leav. wid. Mary. His d. Sarah m. 5 Dec. 1672, Benjamin Gorton; and Mary m. Malachi Rhoades of Providence."⁶¹
