He Notes on Richard:

The name of Tawier, Tare, Tayer or Thayer, is of ancient English origin, and meant from the Anglo-Saxon root word "Taw", to dress skins to make them into leather.

Richard Thayer of Thornbury, which lies in the western part of Gloucestershire, England, about eleven miles north of Bristol, came to Boston, in New England, about the year 1640; he was freeman in that year, and moved to Braintree in the year 1641.

Notes on Richard:

(Mass. Hist. Soc. Coll. 4th Series, V: 105) When Richard Thayer, a widower with eight children, came into New England he was in very humble circumstances, and was allowed to sojourn in a remote and obscure part of the Town of Braintree, until he purchased four acres of land for a few shillings.

The old house of Richard Thayer was near the corner of Middle and Union Streets, and was used, until after 1677, as a garrison depot for protection against the Indians. He was a member of the church at Braintree, and by occupation a farmer, cordwainer, and with his older brother Thomas Thayer, who was freeman 26 May 1647, shoemakers.

Richard Thayer returned to Boston about 1646, where as Richard Tare he married Jane the widow of John Parker; he and his second wife and her children proposed to return to England after 1658, but from letters written by him to his sons Zachariah and Richard from Barbadoes in 1660, there is reason to believe that his death occurred on that island in the West Indies. His Nathaniel, and Katherine Thayer, a probable daughter by his second wife, were with him and his wife on the island.
