Isabelle QuimbyIsabelle ( ________ ) Quimby was born on November 18, 1883 in Ireland.1 She immigrated to the United States, most likely with her parents, in 1895.2 At this time, we do not know the names of her parents. Isabelle was called "Belle" by some of the members of the related families.3 Isabelle served as a Private in the United States Army during World War I.4 Other than her service during WWI, we know almost nothing about Isabelle's early years and pick up a trail about her after the war when she married Herbert R. Quimby, who was known as "Bert."5 Bert appears to have been Belle's second husband, and it was the second marriage for him, too.6 We find Belle and Bert in May of 1930 living in an apartment , for which they are paying thirty dollars a month rent, located at 436 East 138th Street in the Bronx, New York.7 He is employed as a laundryman and she is listed as a laundress. Very little else is known about Isabelle. She does not appear to have had any children with Herbert Quimby, although it is possible that there were children from her first marriage. Isabelle outlived her husband by about thirteen years. She died on October 5, 1953, and was interred on October 8, 1953, at Long Island National Cemetery in Farmingdale, NY, which is where her husband, Bert, is also interred.8
1 Her birth date is from information on the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs gravesite locator website. (http://gravelocator.cem.va.gov). Her place of birth comes from the 1930 U.S. Census - T626 Roll 1465 ED 82 Page 18B Bronx, NY. Note: The 1930 census indicates that she was 37 years of age, which would place her birth at about 1893 instead of 1883. Her husband's age also does not appear to be correct in this census.
