James came to America, arriving in Boston, Mass. in 1634 with his two brothers, Nathaniel & Henry. James was a young boy at that time and Henry was his guardian..  While in Boston, the boy's became acquainted with the Rev. Davenport.  In 1638 they were part of the original group of settlers who Settled the colony of New Haven, Conn..  Henry worked as a farmer for Davenport...It is assumed/believed, that Davenport tutored James..  James appeared to be better educated than most of that time period.  He was first mentioned in the public records around 1647 and was pushed into public service climbing the so called political ladder until 1683 when elected Deputy Governor of the colony of Connecticut, serving right until his death in 1691.
_______

Nathaniel bishop, born about 1607 (deposed aged 75 years on 28 November 1682). Currier & innholder who came to Massachusetts Bay in 1634 & settled in Boston MA. Died between 10 Jun 1687 (date of will) & 15 Jun 1687 (probate of will).
Married by about 1634, Alice ____. Alice was living on 28 Nov 1682, but was not mentioned in the 1687 will of her husband.
On 6 Nov 1665, Nathaniel Bishop deposed to the accuracy of the inventory of the estate of "the late Henry Bishop, his brother"; Property from Henry's estate was found in New Havan & Barbados, as well as Boston. Among the interesting inventory items were "3 months service done by me for my sister [pounds] 12," & "charges for one year's diet and a suit of clothes for the child my brother took, [pounds]8 10s." "Sister" was no doubt Henry's widow, Elizabeth, who died shortly after Henry, but we are not told the identity of the child.
A 3rd brother was James Bishop of New Haven. On 6 Feb 1648/9, when he was in legal difficulties in New Haven, "Henry Bishop was asked if he had any witness, he produced his brother James Bishop."
Jacobus further suggests that Nathaniel, Henry & James were brothers "perhaps also of Thomas (d. 1671/2) of Ipswich, Mass."
