Hendrick De Forest

Hendrick De Forest was baptized 09 Sep 1657 in the New Amsterdam Dutch Reform
Church. (1) He was one of the latter children born to Isaac De Forest and
Sarah du Trieux. His father died when he was 16 years old. When he
was 24 he married Femmetje (Phoebe) Van Flaesbeck on 5 Jul 1682. (2) They were
listed as members Dutch Reform Church on Prince Street in 1686. "Hendrick
De Foreest and wife Femmetje Flaesbeek" were listed right next to "Barent
Flaesbeek and his wife Marritje Hendricks." (3)
Hendrick and Femmetje
had 9 children. Eight of those children were alive at the time of Hendrick's
death in 1715. When these children had their own children baptized, they
almost always had one of their siblings as a witness. (4)
His oldest son,
Barent De Forest, married in 1708 and baptized his first child 6 Feb 1709,
naming her, "Femmente," after his mother. Hendrick De Forest was a
witness, but his wife, Femmente, was not present. It is assumed that Femmentje
Van Flaesbeck died around or before that baptismal date. Hendrick had been
buying and selling land in Queens County, NY and the land records indicate that
by 16 May 1706 he had occupied his house and farm at Madnam's Neck on Long
Island. (5) As we can see from the records, Hendrick was acquiring land from
Isaac Covert who was a son of Lucas Covert and Barbara Sprong. (6) Lucas
Covert died in Madnam's Neck about 1704. On 18 Feb 1705/6 Isaac
Covert of Madnam's Neck sold his land to his "father-in-law Henry Defreiz now of
Bushwick." (7) Thus we know that Henrick De Forest had married Isaac's mother,
Barbara Sprong, by that date. Henrick's first wife, Femmetje Flaesback,
had died sometime before 1706 and Hendrick had remarried to Barbara Sprong,
widow of Lucas Covert, by 18 Feb 1705/6.
Hendrickus De Forest wrote
his will 25 Jan 1714 naming his wife, Barbara, and his 4 sons and 4 daughters.
The will was proved 27 Apr 1715. (8)

(4) Baptismal Records of the children:
Barent was a
witness for children baptized to all 5 of his siblings: Sara, Gerret, Susannah,
Jesse and Femmentje. Garret was recorded as a witness for
all his siblings except Femmetje. However since there is only one known
record of a baptism for a child of hers, Garret may have been a witness for some
lost baptismal record. Susannah De Forest Koning was a
witness for children of Barent, Sara and Jesse. Sara De Forest
Douw was a witness for children of Barent and her husband was a witness
for a child of Jesse. Jesse was a witness for Barent,
Sara and Gerret. Femmetje was a witness for Gerret amd Jesse. Henrikus,
although he is not found to be baptizing children of his own, was a witness for
Gerrit and Jesse.
