"Margaret (Grietje) Dircks, born in New Amsterdam about 1632; died before
April 1, 1671; almost invariably recorded as Grietje; married first, Jan
Hermansen Schut who died about 1652; married second, September 22, 1652, Jan
Nagel, from Limberg, a soldier in the employ of the West Indies Company, who,
March 11, 1644 first appears in the records of the New Amsterdam Church as a
baptismal sponsor. In another record of that church, he is referred to as 'Oosterling,'
i.e. a man from the East. He died in 1657. Married third, March 11, 1658 at New
Amsterdam Dutch Church, Barent Gerretsen Van Swoll, also recorded as 'Van
Vlaesbeck van Swoll,' considered to have been probable son of Gerret Hendricksen
who came to New Amsterdam from Swoll in the ship ST JEAN BAPTIST in 1661...
Margaret Dircks, as the widow of Jan Nagel and about to marry Barent Gerretszen,
appeared before the Orphan's Court in New Amsterdam, May 28, 1658 to satisfy the
court regarding the disposition of property to be made to her three children by
two prior marriages, viz: Fytie Jans Schutt, then seven years old; Jurriaen
Jansen Nagel, then five years old; Styntje Jansen Nagel, then two and one-half
years old; all living with her on the north side of Hoogh Street 'opposite the
hall.' Margaret, in the presence of her future husband, bonded herself to
mortgage the house and lot, and confirmed the agreement to be stated by the
guardians." (Andrew J. Provost, Jr., Early Settlers of Bushwick, Long Island,
