Oral history has it that "Field" had a club foot from a rattlesnake bite he got as a youngster. He was a cowpuncher in eastern Arizona.
Ann, his sister who was living in Rosita, Mexico, wrote many letters to Field and after he lost his job in 1939 she sent him checks of $10 and $15 on a regular basis. In one letter she wishes him a happy birthday saying she thinks it is birthday. She knows it is either his or her other brother John's birthday. She "knows that one is on the second and the other on the fifth."
