Descendants of Elizabeth Smith
Contributed by Mrs. Randolph Maynard
Copied from an old Bible published in 1768 at Cambridge, England, given to Douglas Wright Maynard (Mrs. Randolph Maynard), now in possession of Mrs. Belle Valentine Lumpkin, Farnham, VA.

The records in this Bible relate to the descendants of Eizabeth Smith. She is an own sister of Col. Meriwether Smith, and Mary Smith who married James Webb and half sister of Col. Francis Smith, William and Anne Smith.

Her mother Lucy Meriwether was the daughter of Francis Meriwether and her father Col. Francis Smith of South Farnham Parish in Essex County. He was son of Nicholas Smith of South Farnham Parish and grandson of Nicholas Smith, the emigrant of Petsworth Parish, Gloucester County.

Her Mother Lucy Meriwether was the daughter of Francis Meriweher and Mary Bathurst of whom so much has been written and is so familiar to Virginians.

The use of the word “gossip” after the christening of the children, meant at that time, Standing for the Lord, sponsors, or guardians. The way the word happens to have an undesirable meaning was, in those days the christening of children was a great event and the gossipers came with great difficulty, sometimes over long distances and back roads. They always stayed all night and more often spent several days and sometimes a week. They, of course, brought news and sometimes they drew on their imagination and told things about people that were not true but just hearsay--hence the present meaning of gossip.

Gen. James Richard Muse who is mentioned in ths Bible is my grandfather. He lived at one of the oldest places in Essex County, Marigold. Marigold was purchased by Gen. Muse’s ancient grandfather, Nicholas Smith of Petsworth Parish, Gloucester County as far back as 1714 of Richard Cocke and originally patented by Thomas Bowler, Esq. (Essex Records) This was doubtless the tract known as “the Mary Gold”, which Col. Bowler devised to his daughter Anne, afterwards the wife of Richard Cocke, as Col. Meriwether Smith died at Marigold, Essex County Jan. 24, 1794.
