Samuel Dew (II) was born on 20 September 1771 in Hampshire County, Virginia.¹ He was the son of Samuel Dew (Senior) and Elizabeth Davis.² The 1790 census records for Virginia have been lost. Other sources for residence information will need to be found. Samuel married Joanna Parks, daughter of John Parkes (III) and Susanna Elrod.¹ Samuel worked as a surveyor. Apparently he applied for a patent for a "universal compass."¹ Samuel and Joanna had at least 6 children. These children are Samuel, Susan, Betsy Ann, John Lewis, Sarah and William Henry Harrison. He lived in 1795 in Sandy Ridge, Hampshire County, Virginia, "on the west side of Park's Hollow that is known as Cooper's Mountain on contemporary maps."¹ The 1800 census records for Hampshire Co have been lost. Other sources for residence information will need to be found. He left a will on 14 February 1827 in Hampshire Co. Mr. Kerns claims that Samuel died in Feb 1828 but that he filed his will in 1827 and died a week later. Which year is correct?¹ Samuel died in February 1828 in South Branch, Hampshire County, Virginia.¹ He was 56 years old.
