"Maid in Corbett Arms"

"Miss Ada Louisa TILBURY was a maid in the Corbett Arms. On August Bank holiday 1918* she opened a door (flue) on the grate and the draught from an open door to the room (which might well have been the bar), blew her clothes into the fire opening. She was severly burnt and died in the pub the very same day.

The burns were so severe she was buried with her corsets on for the obvious reasons, and only oil was poured over her.

Her sister Mrs Alice SOMMERTON** late of Sunnyside had taken the younger members of the family to Prothcawl, and had to return home by pony and trap".

Bank Holiday: 5th August 1918
** probably SLOCOMBE
