Principle Chief Old Tassel is also known as Corn tassel as was his son, and his grandson. In fact His grandsons family all went by one name, Corn Tassel. It wasn't until his son that the name was spelled Corntassel as it still is this day. Old tassel was originally known at Thistle head as a youngster. As he grew into his Chieftain trained by Oocononstota and Attakullakulla he was then know by Corn Tassel, First to Kill. His father was known only by First to kill. I'm sure they were definitive warriors by this title, unless, but Cherokee Heritage says the first to kill upon a hunting trip then ended the episode and all others then followed the protrude hunter back to camp carrying his game in his honor. You choose your own version. in his older days he was known as the peace Chief, orator and originator of the 1785 Treaty signed on Keowee, called Hopewell. The community Hopewell is just east of Corntassel. Scott I'm sure will know the streets there are named after the dead Cherokee of the Trail of Tears.
The Wadv~Walk in Peace I hold each New moon of April is held at Corntassel community and we stop to eat lunch at The church and wander thru the cemetery before we proceed onto Tuskgeegee to Sequoyah Museam and then end up finally by night fall to the prayer circle at Chota. The Picture I uploaded at our Language site yesterday is of this Circle. Of course its no longer in its original placement as that spot is now marked by a single tree top protruding from the raised Tennessee River. I believe they still dig for my families artifacts there at nighttime. Its funny the family has not one thing from our own graves which are 100 feet under the waters and what once supported our travels.
Willeo has always been a great thought to me, as he lasted much longer than the rest of the people and his burial in that area has never been shared with me, just the fact he's there. Upon the walk we stop at the old electric Grist Mill and I speak of Willeo, the mill was once called Corntassel electric company.
Thru the years I've searched for other Maw's and found only one or two. This work is shown on my Family tree website, but to see this one has to arrive at Chota each April to study this as I only show it in person. This protects the rights of those live people and its rather hard to swipe 43,000 names in person or remember who's who. I am rather protective of the facts left me in a shoebox as a little boy.
25 Corntassel family members from 5 families crossed the trail, several we lost along the way, including My Gggrandfathers first wife who is laid upon a ditch just miles from the holding fort in Georgia. I find descrepancies in some of this and where my
Gggrandmother comes into play. but our family is now in two parts western, and the Davis clan from the east. We still have not complete gluing ourselves back together, but we've grown from 38 I knew as a child to near 500 known member today. paternally that's over 200 and we meet every May in Going Snake IT. I have a tremendous busy spring each ye making both places but there is nothing more rewarding to what I have sought out to do.
We work each day at finding more, and translating the names of each roll to know who we are related with today. To know the past is to know he future. I hope when I get there I have learned enough to speak to them, and know the facts that carried me to my life as it is now.
