William Hamilton Cobb

(1834-1928)

1.  William Hamilton COBB was born on August 8, 1834 in Tennessee (McMinn County probably).  Sources conflict on both his name and birth date.

William is oft confused with another Fannin County man, William Henry Cobb, son of Rowland Cobb.  Both men had the same middle initial, both were approximately the same age, and both migrated to Texas from Georgia.  In his later years, this individual was a Confederate pensioner from the State of Texas.  On his application he gave the name William Hamilton Cobb.  So that’s that.

LDS records show him born in Washington County, Arkansas, on 08 Aug 1834.  Other researchers have confused him with his brother Charles Robert Cobb and assigned him a birth date of 08 Sep 1842.  In an interview he gave for "A Biographical Souvenir of Texas" in 1889, he gave the 1834 birth date, but stated he was born in Tennessee.  The LDS records probably show him born in Arkansas, as that is where his wife was born.  In any event, research has shown that he was born 08 Aug 1834 in Tennessee (in McMinn County probably).

He appeared on the census in 1850 in Dade County, Georgia.  He immigrated in 1851 to Texas.  He possibly accompanied his first cousin (once removed) James Milton Cobb, when that family relocated to Fannin County, from Tennessee.  He appeared on the census in 1860 in Fannin County, Texas.  Also shown in his household was wife Miriam's son Finis Whitsett, age eight, by her first husband, and her mother Elizabeth (Cravens) age 52, born in Kentucky.  He appeared on the census in 1870 in Fannin County, Texas.  He appeared on the census on June 4, 1880 in Fannin County, Texas.  At that time, he and his brother Lafayette Cobb were nextdoor neighbors.  He appeared on the census in 1900 in Fannin County, Texas.  There were no children remaining in this household at that time.  He died on July 16, 1928 in Austin, Travis County, Texas.  He was buried in Dodd (City) Cemetery, Fannin County, Texas.  During the War Between the States he served as Captain of Company H, 9th Texas Infantry Regiment.  In his later years he was a Confederate pensioner from the State of Texas, and at the time of his death was a resident in the Texas Confederate Veteran's Home in Austin.

William was married to Miriam Dotson VANDIVER (daughter of Moses VANDIVER and Elizabeth CRAVENS) on May 16, 1856 in Fannin County, Texas.  This event was recorded in Marriage Book A, pp 104, Fannin County, Texas.  Interestingly enough, this was the second marriage license taken out by this couple.  Also in Book A, on page 85 is the first license taken out on Sep 23, 1855.  This first license was not executed and the minister's return was not completed.  Whitsett family researchers have advised that according to family lore, Miriam's first husband James Whitsett abandoned his family and disappeared.  Legal complications were the reason for the second license being issued after a delay of some eight months.  This second license was the one that was executed with the minister's return being completed.

Miriam Dotson VANDIVER was born on October 5, 1830 in Washington County, Arkansas.  She appeared on the census in 1860 in Fannin County, Texas.  She appeared on the census in 1870 in Fannin County, Texas.  She appeared on the census on June 4, 1880 in Fannin County, Texas.  She appeared on the census in 1900 in Fannin County, Texas.  He and wife Miriam were still living at Dodd City at that time.  She died on January 7, 1922 in Fannin County, Texas.  She was buried in Dodd (City) Cemetery, Fannin County, Texas.  William Hamilton COBB and Miriam Dotson VANDIVER had the following children:

              +2   i.          James C. COBB (born on March 21, 1857).

+3   ii.          John Howell COBB (born on January 20, 1859).

4   iii.         Mary E. "Molly" COBB was born on September 15, 1870 in Fannin County, Texas.  As she was born in the latter part of the year she did not appear on the 1870 census.  She appeared on the census on June 4, 1880 in Fannin County, Texas.

5   iv.         Ernest Powell COBB was born on May 25, 1880 in Fannin County, Texas.  He was a Post Master, Lannius P.O. between 1905 and 1907 in Fannin County, Texas.  He was the Post Master at the time this post office was closed and all mail service transferred to Dodd City.

SECOND GENERATION

2.  James C. COBB was born on March 21, 1857 in Fannin County, Texas.  He appeared on the census in 1860 in Fannin County, Texas.  He appeared on the census in 1870 in Fannin County, Texas.  He appeared on the census in 1880 in Collin County, Texas.  On this enumeration he declared that he was born in Texas, his father in Tennessee, and his mother in Arkansas.  He appeared on the census in 1900 in Fannin County, Texas.  At that time, his wife's brother Joe Goss was also living in the household.

He was married to Sarah A. "Sallie" GOSS (daughter of A.P. GOSS and Sara A. LNU (GOSS)) on October 29, 1878 in Fannin County, Texas.  This event was recorded in Marriage Book C, pp 548, Fannin County, Texas.  Sarah A. "Sallie" GOSS was born in August 1853 in Tennessee.  The 1880 census shows her as being 24 years of age, translating to a birth year of 1856.  She appeared on the census in 1860 in Fannin County, Texas.  She appeared on the census in 1880 in Collin County, Texas.  On this enumeration she declared that she was born in Tennessee, her father in Tennessee, and her mother in Kentucky.  She appeared on the census in 1900 in Fannin County, Texas.  James C. COBB and Sarah A. "Sallie" GOSS had the following children:

6   i.          C.E. COBB was born in 1880 in Texas (Collin County probably).  He was listed on the census of that year as being one month old.  He was no longer in the household by 1900, therefore it is assumed he had either died or married and moved off.

3.  John Howell COBB was born on January 20, 1859 in Dodd City, Fannin County, Texas.  He appeared on the census in 1860 in Fannin County, Texas.  He appeared on the census in 1870 in Fannin County, Texas.  He appeared on the census on June 4, 1880 in Fannin County, Texas.  At that time he was the oldest child in his parent's home.  He died on October 5, 1922 in Terrell, Kaufman County, Texas.  He was married to Amanda Tommie HINTON on November 20, 1892 in Fannin County, Texas.  John Howell COBB and Amanda Tommie HINTON had the following children:

7   i.          John Howell COBB was born in 1897 in Dodd City, Fannin County, Texas.  He died in 1959.

James S. Whitsett

Miriam Dotson Vandiver was married first to James Whitsett on 26 Sep 1849, in Washington County, Arkansas.  The couple moved soon thereafter to Fannin County, where son Finis was born in 1851.  Sometime afterwards James abandoned his wife and child and disappeared.  Miriam then married William Hamilton Cobb in 1856.  Finis Whitsett was raised by his stepfather, and apparently had a fairly close association with the Cobb family.

1.  James S. WHITSETT was born about 1826 in Washington County, Arkansas.  It is speculative that he was a relative of Dr. William C. Whitsett, who was also enumerated on the 1860 census of Fannin County, the only family by that name in the county at that time.  He was married to Miriam Dotson VANDIVER (daughter of Moses VANDIVER and Elizabeth CRAVENS) on September 26, 1849 in Washington County, Arkansas.  Miriam Dotson VANDIVER was born on October 5, 1830 in Washington County, Arkansas.  James S.
