Anna Mary Utter was born on 27-Aug-1879 at Hamburg, Sussex County, New Jersey. She was the daughter of Sylvester Utter and Maria E Banta. Anna married Edward Benjamin Bennett, son of Isaac Bennett and Mary Kelly, on 23-Mar-1898 at Newfoundland Methodist Church, Franklin, Sussex County, New Jersey; by Rev Milton E Grant. Anna Mary Utter died on 11-Jan-1922 at New Milford, Orange County, New York, at age 42. Anna was buried at Warwick, Orange County, New York.
Anna had been ill with TB for several months before she passed away. Her father, Dr Sylvester Utter, passed away about 6 weeks later, also of TB. Anna told a story remembered years later by her son Harold about the family being started by a baby who survived an Indian attack. We now believe that was referring to Jan Dirkson Straatmaker. In the Middletown Argus, 24 Nov 1896 edition, there was an artical about Annie Utter and a shooting match. I asked Grandpa Bennett ( her son Ronald) if he had heard stories about her being a markswoman.Although he didn't remember for sure, he did remember she owned a pistol and would kill rattlesnakes near their home (possibly when they lived in Cherry Ridge.) She also could shoot game if Edward wasn't home to feed the family. In Paterson and Its Environs, the biography of Annie's father, Sylvester, mentions his hobbies included shooting and fishing. Most likely, Annie and Sylvester shared shooting incommon. From Unknown Newspaper, January 1922: OBITUARIES Mrs. Edward B. Bennett Mrs. Anna Mary Utter Bennett, wife of Edward B. Bennett,of New Milford, N. Y., died January 11, after an illness of many months. Bennett, and the following children: Harold, Wilfred, Edward B, Jr., Inees, Hubert, Kenneth, Ronald and Edna, wife of Seeley Weeden, all of New Milford. She is also survived by her father.       Harold LeRoy Bennett was born on 30-Nov-1898 at Stockholm, Sussex County, New Jersey. He was born on 30-Nov-1898 at Stockholm, Sussex County, New Jersey. He was the son of Edward Benjamin Bennett and Anna Mary Utter. Harold married Helen Nellie Bellinger in 1923 at Warwick, Orange County, New York. Harold LeRoy Bennett died on 26-Jun-1981 at Huntington, Cabell County, West Virginia, at age 82.

Harold relayed to the rest of the family the stories his mother used to tell about how the family decended from a baby who survived and Indian attack. This would refer back to Jan Dirkson Straatmaker. From Unknown Newspaper, Jul 1981: Harold L. Bennett, 82, of Branchland, West Virginia, formerly of Warwick, died June 26, 1981 at Huntington Hospital, Huntington, West Virginia. Mr. Bennett was a retired firemand for the Lehigh & Hudson River Railway Company of Warwick. He moved to West Virginia 12 years ago. He was born in Stockholm, N.J. on Nov. 30, 1898, to Edward and Annie Utter Bennett. He married to former Beulah fite. He was a member of the Branchland Baptist Church and a 60-year member of The Brotherhood of Railroad Locomotive Engineers and Fireman. He leaves hiswife; a son, Leon, of Port Jervis; four brothers, Wilfred and Ronald of Middletown, Edward of Sanford, Florida, and Hubert of Warwick; as sister Ines Morrisof New Milford; 13 grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Pastor Richard Hughen of The Sussex Baptist Church conducted Services Tuesday at 1 p. at the Lazear-Smith Funeral Home , Warwick. Burial was in Warwick Cemetery. It seems Aunt Ines was trying to sort which family member was which. She wrote Uncle Harold who was living in VA asking him since he would remember the most. The following is his letter to her, dated 6 Feb 1974. Uncle Harold would have been 76 at the time, and Aunt Ines 62. Both are gone now, but luckily Aunt Ines was a packrat and saved the letter with other family items! Dear Ines, In answer to your letter will try to tell you what I can remember of the Card family. William Card was a brother to Julia Card. She married our great grandfather Henry S Utter of Cherry Ridge. So of course, William Card became uncle to the Utter children, and Grandma and Grandpa were aunt and uncle to the Card Children. So Grandpa Sylvester Utter was an cousin Card children which included Sylvester Card - Dot's father, and our own mother was a second cousin to Sylvester's children. Uncle Bill and Aunt Amine had several children beside Sylvester. I don't know if George had any children, he lived at West Milford. Barry had Lester, Percy, Charlie, Frak and Stella. W.H. Card had Rachel, Ella, Walter, John, and George. Katie married Bob Hopkins. They had a boy that died many yearsago. And Gertude married Bob Dixon and I remember they had two children both older than I am. Uncle Bill's farm laid over back of the Utter Cemetery at Cherry Ridge. I wish I had taken Casper up to his great grandfather's farm. If there are any questions about this let me know. Because my memory is bad as my eyesight and I may have left out something or somebody.. I know this is badly scribbled letter but I can hardly see the lines so will say good night for now. Love to you and all the rest. Harold Their mother was Anna Mary Utter Bennett, daughter of Dr. Sylvester Utter and his first wife Maria E Banta Utter. Uncle Bill and Aunt Armine are William B Card and Rachel Armine Mann Card. Katie was daugher Harriet Catherine. W.H. Card is William H Card.
