WILLIAM EDWARD SCHENCK, D.D., for many years Secretary of the Presbyterian Board of Publication of the General Assembly in Philadelphia, was born in Princeton, New Jersey, March 29, 1819, the son of John Conover and Anne Brooks (Hutchinson) Schenck. His ancestors came from Holland and settled, about the year 165o, on the western end of Long Island, whence his great-great-grandfather, Garret Schenck, removed in 1696 to Monmouth County, New Jersey, and in 1737 purchased of William Penn's sons sixty-five hundred acres on Stony Brook just opposite Princeton. This branch of the family has resided in Princeton and vicinity ever since. William E. Schenck was prepared for College at Princeton Academy and in the Edgehill Seminary for Boys, entering Princeton College in 1834, one of the original twelve who matriculated at the beginning of its Freshman year with the Class of 1838. His career as an under graduate was most honorable, and he graduated sixth in his class of seventy-five members. On leaving College he began at once the study of law, but after one year, his views having changed soon after his public profession of religion, he dropped the law and entered Princeton Theological Seminary, where he was graduated after a three years' course in 1842. After a year of missionary work, he was installed Pastor of a Presbyterian church in Manchester, New Jersey, in 1843; then had charge of the Hammond Street Church in New York City, 1845 to 1848, and then was called to become Pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Princeton, New Jersey, where his work was greatly blest and with which he remained until 1852. In the latter year he was induced to accept an invita

tion from the Presbytery of Philadelphia to fill the position of Superintendent of Church Extension within its bounds, engaging successfully in that work for two years, when, in 1854, he was elected Secretary of the Presbyterian Board of Publication of the General Assembly, located in Philadelphia. It was here that he found his great life-work, filling that office for nearly thirty-three years, and also for a part of that time that of Editor of the publications of the Board, to the entire satisfaction of the whole Presbyterian Church. Serious and longcontinued illness compelled him to resign his Secre

taryship, together with other offices in 1887, the General Assembly at its meeting that year in Minneapolis adopting, by a rising vote, resolutions of hearty approval of his work and regret at his resignation. Dr. Schenck has been twice married: April 18, 1843, to Jane Whittemore Torrey, daughter of William Torrey of New York City and niece of Professor John Torrey of Princeton, who died in 1856; April 3, 1863, to Mary Blake Kittle, daughter of Rev. Andrew N. Kittle, of the Reformed Dutch Church. He has had eight children: Adeline Torrey, Anna Brooks, William Edward (died 1865), Jane Torrey, Archibald Alexander (Princeton 1869), Ella Whittemore, Samuel Torrey, and Rev. Harris Rogers Schenck (Princeton 1876, died 1897). He has fourteen living grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Dr. Schenck received the degree of Doctor of Divinity from Jefferson College, Pennsylvania, in 1859. He was elected a Director of Princeton Theological Seminary in 1865, and still holds that office, and Secretary of that Board in 187o until he resigned in 1897; Secretary of the Alumni Association of Princeton Seminary since its organization in 1872; member of the Board of Trustees of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church from 1865 to 1887, when he resigned, having been also Vice-President of that Board for many years; Vice-President of the American Colonization Society since 1877. He is the author of many volumes issued by the Presbyterian Board of Publication and elsewhere. He was also an active member of the Joint Committee appointed by the Old and New School General Assemblies of the Presbyterian Church to arrange for the Reunion of those two branches of that Church, which was accomplished in 187o. Since his retirement from the Board of Publication, he has lived quietly in West Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Benjamin Strong, Jr. (December 22, 1872 – October 16, 1928) was an American banker. He served as Governor of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York for 14 years until his death. Strong exerted great influence over the policy and actions of the entire Federal Reserve System.

Strong was also involved in the establishment of the Federal Reserve System. After the Panic of 1907, leading bankers believed a private central bank should be created to issue money. The public was adamantly opposed to the establishment of a central bank. Strong, who was Vice President of Banker’s Trust of New York, was JP Morgan's emissary to the secret Jekyll Island (Georgia) expedition in 1910—one of the selected members who stayed at the luxurious Jekyll Island Hunt Club retreat in November for a private ten-day conference. Also in attendance were Paul Warburg, a recent immigrant from a prominent German banking family who was a partner in the New York banking house of Kuhn, Loeb & Co; Senator Nelson Aldrich (Nelson Rockefeller was named after Aldrich, his maternal grandfather); A. Piatt Andrew, Assistant Secretary of the Treasury and Special Assistant to the National Monetary Commission (the only other NMC member besides Aldrich); and other bankers including Frank A. Vanderlip, president of the National City Bank of New York; Henry P. Davison, senior partner of J.P. Morgan & Co; and Charles D. Norton, president of the Morgan-dominated First National Bank of New York.

What came to be known as the Aldrich Plan was drafted by these men during their conference at Jekyll Island. The plan was written in secrecy, as the public would never approve of a banking reform bill written by bankers; much less of a plan for a central bank. The Aldrich Plan was introduced in the U.S. Congress, and followed by much debate, but never came to a vote, because the party in favor of it was voted out, and the Glass-Owens Bill was introduced instead.

The general outline of the Aldrich Plan did eventually serve as the model upon which the Federal Reserve System was created with, however, significant changes that placed control into political hands (via the Board of Governors, selected by the President of the United States), and limited the role of professional bankers in its operation to that of the 12 branches. It met with Warburg's satisfaction, as he said that minor changes could be adjusted administratively later. The term Central Bank purposely was kept out of its name, as Warburg and others warned it would not be passed otherwise.

Three years later, after months of hearings, drafts, and debates, a bill creating the Federal Reserve System was approved by Congress as the Federal Reserve Act and signed into law by President Wilson on December 23, 1913. The Federal Reserve System has many similarities to the National Reserve Association proposed by the Aldrich Plan, but with vastly differing management and control.

Strong became President of Banker’s Trust in 1914, and shortly thereafter was appointed Governor of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York the same year, which position he maintained until his death in 1928.

Economic historian Charles P. Kindleberger states that Strong was one of the few American policymakers interested in the troubled financial affairs of Europe in the 1920s, and that had he not died in 1928, just a year before the Great Depression, he might have been able to maintain stability in the international financial system.

Benjamin Strong Jr. was elected governor of the New York Fed at the Bank’s first board meeting on October 5, 1914, six weeks prior to the opening day. He was 41, and then president of Bankers Trust Co. of New York.

During his 14 years in office, his knowledge of the banking history of the United States, coupled with his intense interest in international affairs, made him a dominant force in U.S. monetary and banking affairs.

Throughout the 1920s, Governor Strong promoted more effective cooperation among the world’s central banks, and he traveled extensively to carry out this objective.

Born in 1872 in Fishkill-on-Hudson, New York, he embarked on a financial career in 1891 with Cuyler, Morgan and Co., an investment and financial management firm. He later became assistant secretary of Atlantic Trust Co., and following several mergers, he was named secretary of Bankers Trust Co. in 1904. He became vice president in 1909, and president in 1914.

Governor Strong died in 1928 while still chief executive officer of the New York Fed.

      Jennie Schenck was born circa 1849 at New Jersey. She was the daughter of Rev. William Edward Schenck and Jane Whittemore Torrey.

      Rev. Harris Rodgers Schenck was born on 27-Feb-1856 at Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Rev. William Edward Schenck and Jane Whittemore Torrey. Harris married Mary Frances Hollister, daughter of David Frederick Hollister and Mary E. Jackson, on 30-Aug-1881. Harris married Mary Arminta Smith on 26-Feb-1884 at New York City, New York County, New York. Rev. Harris Rodgers Schenck died on 21-Jun-1898 at Bronxville, Westchester County, New York, at age 42.
     

The death of the Rev. H. R. Schenck occurred at Chambersburg, Pa., on June 21, 1898. Mr. Schenck was born at Philadelphia on February 27, 1856, his father being the Rev. William S. Schenck, D. D. After graduation, Mr. Schenck taught for a year and then entered the Seminary, being ordained by the Presbytery of Westchester in 1881. He was pastor at Mahopac Falls, N. Y., from 1881 to 1887 and then was called to Mt. Kigco, where he remained for five years. In 1892 he accepted the pastorate of the Falling Springs Presbyterian Church of Chambersburg where he remained until his death.

Mr. Schenck was twice married—in 1881 to Miss Minnie F. Hollister of Bridgeport, who died in 1882, and in 1884 to Miss Mary A. Smith of Bronxville, N. Y. Mr. Schenck was a trustee, of the Penns Neck Cemetery Co., Princeton, N. J., where many of his ancestors are buried, and he was also trustee of the Wilson College for Women at Chambersburg. In 1894 Mr. Schenck published a history of the Falling.




The Rev. H. R. Schenck was born in Philadelphia, Pa., Feb. 27, 1856; was graduated from Princeton College in 1876; taught at the Princeton Preparatory School; entered Princeton Seminary in September, 1877, was graduated, taking a fourth year, and leaving the Seminary in May 1881; was ordained by the Presbytery ot Westchester, N. Y., June 7, 1881; was Pastor at Mahopac Falls, N. Y., from 1881-1887; Pastor at Mt. Kisco, N. Y, 1887-1892; was called to the pastorate of the Falling Spring Church, Feb. 9, 1892; was received by the Presbytery of Carlisle, Apr. 13, and installed as Pastor of the Falling Spring Church, May 26, 1892.

     Mary Frances Hollister was the daughter of David Frederick Hollister and Mary E. Jackson. Mary married Rev. Harris Rodgers Schenck, son of Rev. William Edward Schenck and Jane Whittemore Torrey, on 30-Aug-1881. Mary Frances Hollister died on 12-Jun-1882 at Mohopac Falls, Putnam County, New York.
     She was also known as Minnie Hollister. She was also known as .

      Eva Baird was born circa 1865 at Ohio. She was the daughter of Stephen Baird and Lydia Brown. Eva married William Sherwood circa 1885.

      Hanna Baird was born circa 1867 at Ohio. She was the daughter of Stephen Baird and Lydia Brown.

      Ira J. Baird was born circa Aug-1869 at Ohio. He was the son of Stephen Baird and Lydia Brown. Ira married Meda A. Upp circa 1892.
     In the census on 18-Apr-1930 Ira J. Baird was named I. J. Baird.

      Ralph S. Baird was born circa 1874 at Ohio. He was the son of Stephen Baird and Lydia Brown. Ralph married Ettie Langley on 11-Mar-1896 at Coffey County, Kansas. Ralph S. Baird died in Oct-1959 at Lyon County, Kansas.

      William Sherwood was born circa 1856 at Indiana. William married Eva Baird, daughter of Stephen Baird and Lydia Brown, circa 1885.

      Othel S. W, Sherwood was born circa 1901 at Kansas. He was the son of William Sherwood and Eva Baird.

      Nancy Sarah Sheafor was born on 1-Jun-1844 at Gratis, Preble County, Ohio. She was the daughter of Lorenzo Dow Sheafor and Catherine Poke Messick. Nancy married Stephen Baird, son of Andrew Baird and Hannah Covenhoven, on 14-Nov-1912 at Burlington Twp., Coffey County, Kansas. Nancy Sarah Sheafor died on 16-Feb-1923 at Burlington Twp., Coffey County, Kansas, at age 78.

     Catherine married Lorenzo Dow Sheafor.
