534. William H.2 Conover (321666) was born June 6, 1832 Pennsylvania; m. Susannah Landis (321667), daughter of Abraham Landis (377823) and Mary Miller (377824), March 29, 1855.

William H. Conover (321666) and Susannah Landis (321667) appeared on the census of June 26, 1860 Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio; personal property 1,100.00. He was shown in the census on June 26, 1860 as a farmer. By Abram Yost in the Foreward of his book. The patriarch of the family of 'Conover' to which we claim as our clan was a William Conover. He was born in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the son of Gilbert Conover who is supposed to have lived his entire life in that state. It is not known who Gilbert's wife was, but history tells us that she died in that same state in early womanhood. I have exerted considerable effort ans spent dollars in an endeavor to learn where in Pennsylvania this Gilbert lived, for it may have helped us to establish the missing links between us and the patriarchial family of Van Kouwenhoven (which was the earlier name for Conver). These Van Kouwenhovens were early immigrants in the New Amsterdam area (now New York City and Long Island) arriving there May 24 1630. But since I have been unable to establish this link, we must be satisfied with what we can document. When William's son Abram (his youngest of five, and my grandfather) was but a couple years old, he, William, abandoned his wife and brood of five children. This left his wife with considerable responsibilities in thise days (1860's) to provide for her family, and of course most of her heartaches are not known to us. William was never seen by his family again. Although some mention of his whereabouts did circulate, it is not known where he died. It is likely the while their children were being born, that they were in Taylorsburg (Randolph-Madison township area). When I was a small boy Grandpa Conover took me for rides in his horseless carriges, and on several occasions pointed to an old building at Taylorsburg in point on east side of Salem Pike and Westbrooke, telling that is where he had lived as a small boy. There is record that a William Conover operated a store in Taylorsburg before 1888. This building was torn down long ago to be replaed by a nice brick house which was more recently torn down when they relocated Ohio 49. William is also supposed to have been a fancier of fine horses. Grandpa Conover also pointed to an older house in Stringtown, east side of Union Road and just a few houses south of the old schoolhouse, saying that he had also lived there. It was an old house and I suspect it was there that Gr-Grandmother moved after her husband left her. I am no longer able to identify which house it was. William Conover married Susannah Landis, daughter of Abraham and Mary (Miller) Landis. Their children were: Mary, Lydia, Glibert, Ella, and Abram. Gilbert was named for his paternal Grandfather while Abram was named for his maternal Grandfather, which was a custom used by many couples in those days. Using this pattern, and with Mary begin named for her maternal grandmother, we might expect William's mother's name was Lydia. --Abram Yost September, 1976.
