[411]
John Alexander is the oldest known we have at this time, we have a piece
of
clay that has been inscribed with notes that appear to make it from a
"gun pit"
in Selma, AL. The inscription is hand-written in cursive and reads: "J.A.
Cordray","Selma Ala","Came to Selma Feb 2nd 1863 Left Selma","Selma Ala
1864",
there is an outline of a cannon that says "No 103 16,000 lb 10 inftry".
The
reference to the 10 inf. is a guess at the light inscricption.
The only reference we have to his birthplace is a delayed birth cert. for
Terry
W. Cordray Sr. dated Aug. 18, 1942, it shows his birthplace as State of
West
Virigina.
The Cordray family mentioned in "Against Oblivion, History of Calhoun
County Georgia" are
said to have been French Huguenots who fled France to Charleston,South
Carolina due to
religious persecution.
Though there does seem to be some conflict in the information taken from
this source
and other sources including family oral history.
