The Magyars
The Arpads

The Magyars were a nomadic tribe who settled in the Carpathian Basin (now Hungary) and plundered Europe in the late 9° and early 10° centuries. Árpád was the Magyar leader whom sources name as the single leader who unified the Magyar tribes. The Arpads ruled Hungary, with minor interruptions, for 400 years, to the beginning of the 14° century.

Principality of Hungary

This early Hungarian state was founded in 896. Its military power allowed the Hungarians to conduct fierce campaigns and raids as far as today's Spain until their defeat by HRE Otto I in 955.

Kingdom of Hungary

The Kingdom of Hungary emerged in 1000, when the former Principality was recognized as a Kingdom.
