Chapter 3

Robert Barber

Robert Barber was born about 1768-1769 in Georgia, the third son of George and Margaret (Watkins) Barber.

Robert Barber served in the Georgia Militia during the War of 1812, from October 5, 1813 to November 1813.32

Robert married Sarah Orr, his cousin, about 1794 in Oglethorpe County, Georgia. Sarah was born 25 September 1779, the oldest child of Christopher and Martha (Watkins) Orr. Martha Watkins was the daughter of Reese Watkins and the niece of Margaret (Watkins) Barber, the mother of Robert Barber. Christopher Orr served in the American Revolution from North Carolina, and Reese Watkins was a patriot, furnishing goods to the colonials.33

Robert and Sarah Barber were some of the earliest settlers of Clarke County, Georgia, and owned considerable property in Clarke and Jackson Counties. Their home was on what is now Barber Street in Athens, Georgia.

Robert Barber died September 18, 1850 in Athens, and his widow Sarah died 6 January 1853. Their children:

  1.  Christopher Barber, born ca. 1795, died before 1850, married, name 
      of wife unknown, left one child.

      A.  George T. Barber, born ca. 1829.

  2.  Polly (Mary) Barber, born ca. 1796, living 1850, married Samuel Bryant,
      3 November 1812 in Clarke County, Georgia.34  Probably had more than one 
      child, only know of one.

      A.  Sarah Bryant, born 1818, Clarke County, Georgia, died 7 November 
          1857 Clarke County, married Greensby Wetherford Barber in 1851 as 
          his second wife.  (see chapter 5)

          b.  inf. babe died 5 October 1857, Clarke County, Ga.

  3.  Ann Barber, born ca. 1800, Athens, Geogia, married David Kinney.

  4.  Elizabeth Barber, born ca. 1808, Athens, Georgia, married Harvey 
      Archer 19 September 1830, Jackson County, GA.  Elizabeth died before 
      1850.

  5.  Sarah Martha Barber, born 1816, Clarke County, Georgia, married 
      Henry Jones.35

      A.  Sophia Jones, born 1847, Clarke County, Ga. 

      B.  Thadeus Jones, born 1850, Clarke County, Ga.

  6.  Frances Barber, born ca. 1818, Athens, Georgia, died ca.1846, 
      Clarke County, Georgia, was the first wife of Greensby Wetherford 
      Barber, whom she married 7 January 1838 in Athens.36  Greensby was 
      her first cousin, the son of Reese Barber.  (see chapter 5)

      A.  Joseph Barber, born 1839, Clarke County, Ga. died 6 November 1857
          Athens, Ga.

      B.  Mary Barber, born 1841, died 5 October 1857.

      C.  Sarah Barber, born 1843, Athens, died 1916, married (1) ___Dowdy,
          (2) ____Bolling.37

      D.  John S. Barber, born 1845, Cass County, Georgia, served in the 
          Civil War, Lumpkin's Battery, Palmer's Battalion, Georgia 
          Artillary as private, was seriously wounded at The Crater, near 
          Petersburg, Virginia, his right arm was paralysed, and he lost two 
          fingers from his left hand.  He married Nora Gray.  John and Nora 
          were living in Whitehall, Clarke County, Georgia in 1906, when 
          John applied for a pension.38

  7.  Margaret Barber, born ca. 1822, Clarke County, Georgia, married 
      Augustus Patman, 26 January 1843 in Athens, Geogia.39

  8.  John C. Barber, born 1826, Clarke County, Georgia, married Martha 
      E. Weir, daughter of Samuel And Nancy Weir, on 15 October 1846 in 
      Athens.  John died at the young age of 23 on 19 September 1849 from .
      the fever.  He left a widow and two small children.  Martha married
      Albert G. Pitner in 1853 and had several children.40

      A.  Robert Thomas Barber, born 12 July 1847, Athens, Georgia, married
          Cora Belle Alvis, ca 1873.  She was born 23 November 1858, died 
          1 January 1918 in Selma, Alabama.  Robert Barber was a private in 
          the Civil War, with the 3rd Georgia Cavalry, he surrendered with 
          Robert E. Lee at Appomattox.  He was later a conductor on the 
          railroad than ran from Rome, Georgia to Selma, Alabama.  He 
          died in Selma 19 July 1908.

          a.  Addie Barber, born ca. 1875, Selma, Alabama, died 1958, married
              Frank Davidson, no issue.

          b.  Robert Deans Barber, born 3 July 1878, Selma, Alabama, died 17
              January 1962, married Madolyn Darby.  She was born 13 
              Janary 1885, died 1 February 1971, Selma, Alabama.

              aa.  Robert Stanley Barber, born 13 February 1908, unmarried,
                   lived in Selma, AL in 1974.

              bb.  Cora Alvis Barber, born 20 February 1910, unmarried, 
                   lived in Washington, D.C. in 1974.

              cc.  Madolyn Elizabeth Barber, born 22 January 1912,
                   died 4 March 2005 married Carroll Posey Denning, born
                   16 July 1906, died 23 December 1996. They lived in
                   Maitland, Florida, 1975. They last resided in Winter
                   Springs, Florida.

Will Book C    )             I, Robert Barber of the County of Clark and
pages 162-165  )     State of Georgia, being of sound mind and disposing       
                     memory, and knowing the uncertainty of human life,
do make and ordain this my last will and testament.

  1.  I give my body to the dust whence it came, and my soul into the hands 
      of a merciful God.

  2.  It is my will that my just debts be paid from the sale of the crop or
      money in hand or both as soon after my death as may be practicable.

  3.  I give, bequeath and devise to my beloved wife, Sarah, all my estate,
      both real and personal, consisting of lands, negroes, stock, household
      and kitchen furniture, plantation utensils, and whatever else I have
      and own, to hold, possess, and enjoy the same during her natural life,
      and after her death to be divided and disposed of by my Executor
      hereinafter named in manner and form as hereinafter mentioned.

  4.  It is my will that as soon as practicable after the death of my wife,
      the Said Sarah Barber, my executor proceed to sell the plantation and
      tract of land whereon I now live consisting of several tracts 
      purchased at different times and constituting my present settlement, 
      and I hereby authorize and empower him to sell said plantation and 
      land at public or private sale, upon credit or for cash, exercising 
      a sound discretion for the best interests of my legatees.

  5.  I have now living four children, to wit, Mary Bryant, Ann Kenney, 
      Martha Jones and Margaret Patman, and four sets of grandchildren, to 
      wit, George T. Barber, son of my deceased son Christopher Barber; 
      George Archer, Sarah Jane Archer, Robert Archer, and Elizabeth Ann 
      Archer, children of my deceased daughter Elizabeth Archer; Joseph 
      Barber, Mary Barber, Sarah Barber, and John Barber, children of my 
      deceased daughter Frances Barber; and Robert Barber and Sarah 
      Cornelia Barber, children of my deceased son John Barber, among who I 
      wish my estate to be divided after the death of my wife in manner 
      and form as follows. 

  6.  What I have heretofore done for my children or grandchldren, I hereby
      ratify and confirm, and wish them to share my estate now willed without
      reference thereto.

  7.  It is my will and desire tht my negroes be divided into eight lots as
      nearly equal as may be and with reference to keeping families together,
      and divided among my children and grandchildren aforesaid by lot, and
      vest in them as hereinafter set forth and appointed.

  8.  I give, bequeath and devise to my son-in-law Green W. Barber, one 
      eighth of my estate after the death of my wife, in trust however and 
      for the sole and separate use of my daughter Mary Bryant and her 
      children, under no circumstances to be subject to the debts of my 
      son-in-law Samuel Bryant who is unfortunately involved in his affairs.

  9.  I give, bequeath and devise a like eight part of my estate after the
      death of my wife to my daughter Ann Kinney during her life and then to
      be divided between her children, share and share alike, said eighth 
      part to be paid over to my son-in-law David Kinney without security in
      reference to the interest of the chldren.

 10.  I give, bequeath and devise a like eight part of my estate after the
      death of my wife to Green W. Barber, his heirs and assigns in trust and
      for the sole and separate use of Martha Jones and her chldren and under
      no circumstances to be subject to the debts of her husband, and after
      her death to be equally divided among her children, share and share 
      alike.

 11.  I give, bequeath and devise a like eight part of my estate after the
      death of my wife as aforesaid to my grandchildren, George Archer, Sarah
      Jane Archer, Robert Archer, and Elizabeth Ann Archer, children of my
      deceased daughter Elizabeth Archer, share and share alike, in fee 
      simple forever and appoint my son-in-law Green W. Barber guardian 
      to receive and manage the same and pay it over to them as they 
      arrive of age respectively, in the case of the boys, or marry in the 
      case of the girls, or become of age.


 12.  I give, bequeath and devise a like eighth part of my estate after 
      the death of my wife to George T. Barber, son of my deceased son 
      Christopher Barber, in fee simple forever. 
 
 13.  I give, bequeath and devise a like eighth part of my estate after the
      death of my wife to my grandchldren Joseph Barber, Mary Barber, 
      Sarah Barber and John Barber, children of my deceased daughter Frances 
      Barber, share and share alike in fee simple forever, and appoint my 
      son-in-law Green W. Barber, their father, guardian and trustee for 
      them to receive and manage the same and pay it over to them as they 
      arrive of age respectively in the case of the boys, or marry in the 
      case of the girls, or become of age.

 14.  I give, bequeath and devise a like eighth part of my estate after 
      the death of my wife, to my grandchildren Robert Barber and Sarah 
      Cornelia Barber, children of my deceased son John Barber, share and 
      share alike in fee simple forever, and appoint my son-in-law Green W. 
      Barber, their guardian and trustee to receive and manage the same 
      and pay it over to them as they are of age respectively, in the 
      case of the boy or marry in the case of the girl or become of age.

 15.  I give, bequeath and devise a like eighth part of my estate after the
      death of my wife to Green W. Barber, his heirs and assigns in trust
      and for the sole and separate use of my daughter Margaret Patman and
      her children and never be subject to the debts of her present or any
      future husband.

 16.  I hereby nominate, constitute and appoint my friend William L. Mitchell
      Esq. attorney at law, executor of this my last will and testament, 
      hereby revoking all former wills by me made.  In Witness where of, 
      I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 10th day of June 1850.

                     make this my last will and testament, hereby 
revoking all other wills heretofore made by me.

  1.  I desire my body to be buried in a decent Christian manner by the 
      side of my deceased husband.

  2.  I give to Greensby W. Barber the sum of five hundred dollars, in 
      consideration of his many attentions to me and his extra pains and 
      trouble in attending to my business.

  3.  I give to my grand Daughter Elizabeth Ann Archer, daughter of 
      Harvey Archer, the sum of three hundred dollars in consideration that 
      she was partly raised by me and I feel great concern of her welfare.

  4.  I give to my grand Daughter Sarah Barber, wife of Greensby W. 
      Barber, and daughter of Samuel Bryant, the sum of one hundred 
      dollars in consideration of her many valuable services while she 
      lived with me.

  5.  My will and desire is that the balance of my estate be distributed 
      among the legatees under the will of my husband, the said Robert 
      Barber Deceased, according to the terms, conditions, limitations, and 
      restrictions of this will, which I adopt as my will so far as the 
      balance of my Estate is concerned, which I wish to go in the same 
      manner as he has willed, bequeathed and devised the revised the 
      residium of his estate.

  6.  I hereby nominate and apppoint Wiliam L. Mitchell Esq. Attorney at Law,
      sole executor of this my Last Will and Testament.

In witness whereof I have hereinto set my hand and seal this October 1st,

Howell Cobb, who witnessed the will of Sarah Barber, is listed on the 
1850 census of Clarke County, Georgia as age 35, and Speaker, U. S. House 
of Representatives.  His father, Col. John Alexander Cobb, was a neighbor 
of Robert Barber.

Orr Family

Christopher Orr, born 1 October 1754, in Augusta County, Virginia, was 
the son of Robert Orr, who died 1779 in Johnston County, North Carolina.  
Christopher Orr married Martha Watkins, 27 August 1778 in Wake County, 
North Carolina.  Martha was the daughter of Reese Watkins, she was born 
16 March 1761 in Augusta County, Virginia.

Christopher Orr served in the American Revolution from North Carolina.  
Their children:41

  1.  Sarah Orr, born 25 September 1779, Wake County, North Carolina, died 
      6 January 1853, married Robert Barber, son of George and Margaret 
      (Watkins) Barber.

  2.  Phillip Orr, born 7 January 1781, died 11 April 1841, married Niri 
      Rucker, 12 December 1820.  They lived in Coweta County, Georgia.

  3.  Ann (Nancy) Orr, born 11 December 1782, died 21 September 1823, married
      John Gibson, ca. 1798.  He was born 11 May 1774, died 8 August 1837.
      They lived in Lawrence County, Alabama.

  4.  Mary (Polly) Orr, born 11 March 1785, died 27 October 1874, married 
      Sylvanus Gibson Jr., brother of John Gibson.  They settled in Lawrence
      County, Alabama.

  5.  John Orr, born 16 April 1787, married (1) Eady Stone 14 January 
      1813, (2) Elsey Freeman 1 February 1820.  John and Elsey moved to 
      Morgan County, Alabama.

  6.  Jonathan Orr, born 26 December 1789, died 29 April 1857, married 
      Sarah Allen Glenn, 18 October 1822 and settled in Lawrence County 
      Alabama.

  7.  Jacob Orr, born 11 December 1790, married Elizabeth Wise 14 February 
      1818.  She may have been Elizabeth Davis Wise, daughter of William    
      Davis.  They settled Morgan County, Alabama.

  8.  Margaret Orr, born 26 December 1791, died 19 May 1841, married 
      Drury Stovall, 21 February 1809.

  9.  Watkins Orr, born 12 December 1793, died 29 November 1849, married 
      Cynthia Reeves, 7 January 1822, settled Morgan County, Alabama.

 10.  Martha Orr, born 1 January 1799, married David Johnson 20 November 
      1815, settled in Georgia.

 11.  Elizabeth Orr, born 1 October 1801, married Henry J. Wise, 5 
      January 1825, settled in Georgia.

 12.  Olive Orr, born 9 February 1803, died 3 May 1862, married Robert 
      Malone Johnson, 10 September 1819, settled in Lawrence County, Alabama.

     Christopher Orr was born 1 October 1754.

     Martha Orr was born 16 March 1761 A. D.
