Elizabeth Barber Stiles
Elizabeth Barber, the daughter of George and Margaret Watkins Barber,
was born about 1779 in Wilkes County, Georgia.
Elizabeth Barber married Joseph Gill Stiles, 13 March 1799, in
Oglethorpe County, Georgia. Joseph Gill Stiles was born in Chesterfield
County, Virginia ca. 1779, the son of John Stiles, Revolutionary soldier
from Virginia and his wife Agnes Franklin.
Joseph and Elizabeth Stiles had four daughters42 born to them before
Elizabeth died in 1805, at the age of 25. She is buried at the side of
her husband in Jones County, Georgia. (her tombstone says she was 25
when she died. My book and an earlier book published by the DAR
incorrectly stated that she was 35 when she died)

2. Nancy Stiles, born 9 September 1801, Oglethorpe County, Georgia,
married (1) Henry Johnson 3 December 1818 in Jones County, GA,
(2) William Snead 12 Jan 1834, Jones Co, GA. Nancy was living with
Margery Teel in Barbour County Alabama in 1870. The pictures and
much of the information on Nancy and her husbands and descendants
comes from Peni Teel Andrews.
A. Margery Johnson, born 1832, married Joel G Teal in 1854 in
Barbour Co AL. Joel was killed in the Civil War, 1 June 1864.
Margery filed for a Civil War pension as the widow of Joel G
Teal. Pension was received. Indigent family record M.R.D.
states Joel had 5 dependents, and they were allowed to draw $15
a year.

(24 Jan 1963) P. F. Teel, 77, Dies Today In Hospital
Funeral services for Porter Franklin Teel, 77, who lived near Douglass,
will be held Saturday morning, Jan. 26 at 10:30 o'clock in the Salem
Baptist Church in Shelby county with interment in the Salem Cemetery.
Officiating will be the Rev. Bill Stowell of Shreveport, La., Baptist
minister.
Mr Teel died Thursday morning, Jan 24 at 1:30 o'clock in City Memorial
Hospital.
Born Aug 21, 1885 in Alabama, Mr Teel was the son of Henry Teel and
Mattie Turner Teel. He was married Aug 21, 1913, to Omegia Fountain who
survives him. A retired farmer, Mr Teel had lived in Nacogdoches County
for 12 years and was a member of the Methodist Church.
Survivors in addition to his wife are four daughters, Mrs Joe Meador of
Houston, Mrs Jessie Jackson and Mrs Ode Fountain of Nacogdoches and Mrs
Tony Marquise of Galveston; one son, Porter Lee Teel of Tenaha; two
sisters, Mrs Retter Knight of Alabama and Mrs Diskey Frengelis of
Galveston: one brother, Homer Teel of Highland; 17 grandchildren; and 11
great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Irvan Fountain, Robert Parrish, Bill Hooper, Ray
Cobb, Adrian Fountain, and Alton Fountain.
Oakley-Metcalf Funeral Home will be in change of arrangements.

Funeral for Mrs Omega Teel, 95, of 1200 Ferguson will be held Saturday at
4 p.m. in the Oakley-Metcalf Chapel with interment in the Salem Cemetery
in Shelby County.
Officiating will be the Rev. M.A. Ervin, pastor of the Calvary Baptist
Church.
Mrs Teel died Friday, July 16, in Memorial Hospital.
Born April 18, 1887, in San Augustine County, she was the daughter of John
and Penny Hatton Fountain, a member of the Baptist Church, and the widow
of Porter Franklin Teel who died Jan. 24, 1963.
Surviving are a son, Porter Lee Teel of Henderson; three daughters, Mrs
Lora Dell Fountain of Nacogdoches, Mrs Mattie Jackson of Dickinson, and
Mrs Jannie Marquise of Galveston; 15 grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren;
and eight great great grandchildren.
Mrs Hazel Jones will direct the music. Oakley-Metcalf Funeral Home will
direct arrangements.

daughter by a previous marriage, and she
was raised by Robert and Frankie.
Mr Fountain was the son of Odis and Lora Dell (Teel) Fountain.
He attended the Martinsville schools, and moved to Nacogdoches from Orange
in 1989. He served our country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean
Conflict, and was honorably discharged in 1958. On October 3, 1962, Mr
Fountain married Georgia Francis "Frankie" Freeland in Nacogdoches. He
was self-employed in air conditioning and refrigeration maintenance, from
which he retired. In his leisure time, Mr Fountain enjoyed gardening and
playing all kinds of games, although talking with friends was his
favorite activity. He was a very loving, caring man who did not mind
helping those who needed his help. Family was very important to him,
especially his grandchildren. Mr Fountain will be missed by all who knew
and loved him.

Funeral services for Elbert Eugene Fountain, 33, of Covington, Ga. will be
held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Oakley-Metcalf Chapel with interment in
Sunset Memorial Park.
Officiating will be the Rev J.T. Johnson, pastor of the Spring Hill
Baptist Church.
Mr Fountain died Friday in Covington. Born April 22, 1939 in San
Augustine County, Mr Fountain formerly lived in Nacogdcohes and had been
a resident of Covington the last three months. He was a trucker.
The relatives are not certain that Elbert married Jeanette
Lowrimore. But she is the one that provided the information for the death
certificate. Elbert was murdered in a domestic quarrel with his girlfriend.
Her brother hit him with a jack tool in the back of the head on 2 Feb 1973.
Was Jeanette his girlfriend who caused his death, and then gave the info
for his death certificate?

Funeral services for Charles Burdett Lawson, 64, of Nacogdoches,
were held Thursday, February 22, 2001, at Cason Monk-Metcalf Sunset Chapel
with Rev. M. A. Ervin, Pastor of Bethel Baptist Church officiating with
burial at Bethel Cemetery.
Lawson died Tuesday, February 20, 2001 in Nacogdoches.
He was born April 10, 1936 at Vivian, LA. He was owner of Shady Grove
Grocery for over 24 years and was a member of Bethel Baptist Church.
Survivors include wife, Donna Lawson of Nacogdoches; sons, Randy Lawson of
Nacogdoches, Craig Burdett Lawson, Christopher "Bo" Patton all of
Nacogdoches; daughters, Dawn Patton of Garrison, Candi Patton of San
Augustine and Crystal Patton of Nacogdoches; eight grandchildren and one
great-grandchild.
Memorial service for Virginia Fountain Lawson of Nacogdoches,
Texas, will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, January 31, 2010, at Cason Monk-Metcalf
Sunset chapel. Sonny Scarborough will be officiating. Private family
interment will be at Bethel Cemetery in Nacogdoches, Texas. Virginia
passed away January 28, 2010, at her home in Nacogdoches. She was born
February 23, 1935, in Martinsville, Texas, to Odis and Lora Dell Fountain.
She is preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Robert and Elbert
Fountain; and special aunt and friend, Janie Marquise. Virginia is
survived by her sons, Randy Lawson and wife, Linda, and Craig Lawson and
wife, Sheila, all of Nacogdoches, Texas; granddaughters, Brandi DeGeer and
husband, Shane, of Nacogdoches, Texas, and Candice Peterson and Leslie
Lloyd, both of Dallas, Texas; and grandsons, Caleb Lawson of Nacogdoches,
Texas, Joel Lloyd of Beckville, Texas, and Daniel and Jordon Gates, both
of Crockett, Texas. She is also survived by four great-grandchildren,
Maegan DeGeer, Tanner DeGeer, Aidan Peterson and Mason Lloyd. Honorary

Mr. Teel died Friday at Laird Memorial Hospital.
Born May 6, 1924 in Camp Worth, he was a ranch foreman at Clague Ranch and
a Baptist. He was also a veteran of World War II serving in the Coast
Guard.

Mrs. Sandy Smith of Kilgore and Mrs. Peni Andrews of Venus; one son, Danny

Mrs. R. P. Teal Dead
It is with deep regret that the Courier learns of the death of Mrs. R. P.
Teal, which occurred at the family home in Pennington on November 23.
Mrs Teal, who was born in Alabama, but who had lived in Pennington for
more than 30 years, was 70 years of age. She was a consecrated member of
the Baptist church and the funeral services were conducted by the Baptist
minister from Groveton. Interment was in the Pennington cemetery. Left
to mourn her death are the husband, Mr R.P. Teal, and three daughters,
who have the deepest sympathy of a large community.

Bob Teal Dead
Mr. R. P. Teal, one of Houston county's oldest and best citizens, died at
his home near Pennington Friday night about 8 o'clock. Funeral services
were held Saturday afternoon, and burial was in the Penningthon cemetery.
The Masonic lodge, of which he was a member, had charge of the services.
Mr. Teal had been a citizen of Houston county for many years, being
engaged in farming, and was unusually successful in his occupation. He
was a man of fine character and ideals and earned the friendship and
respect of all who knew him. He always led a Christian life and was a
member of the Methodist church. He leaves several children, besides other
relatives, to mourn his loss. His community suffered an irreparable loss
in his passing.
The Courier joins in extending sympathy to the bereaved relatives.
The Courier has ascertained the following facts regarding the
life of Mr R. P. Teal, since writing the notice of his death. Robert
Porter Teal was born in Barber county, Georgia in 1856, being 69 years of
age at his death. He came to Texas and located at Pennington in 1886.
He was married to Martha Vickers December 15 1879. Four children were born
to them: one son, who died in childhood, and three daughters. The
daughters, all of whom are living, are Mrs. W. B. Bagwell, Mrs. R. H.
Bates and Miss Florence Teal.

Joseph Gill Stiles was well known in Jones County, his home was a stage
stop between Milledgville and Fort Hawkins. He died 18 February 1858.
Mrs. Mary Stiles died 24 December 1865 and is buried near her husband.
