piecess of legislation at Sacramento, until January of 1942
when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy with an ensign's
commission. According to Mary Johnson, "he should have been
commissioned as a Lt.(jg), but the recruiting officer made
a mistake, which Bob didn't find out about until sometime
later. He was overage [at 29] to be an ensign, but by then
it was too late".
He attended Mine Warfare School at Yorktown, VA. After
graduation he was sent to San Francisco to meet up with his
ship, and it was there during the week before Christmas of
1943 that Robert Johnson met Josephine Henrietta Mary
Fallehy, who had been widowed by the war earlier that year.
They first met at San Francisco's Fairmont Hotel, they
announced their engagement on Christmas Eve, and on
Christmas Day Robert left for the South Pacific. Robert was
stationed aboard the YMS-90, and served in the Gilbert,
Marshall and Solomon Islands. The only story he is
remembered to have ever told about his experiences in the
war concerned a skipper he had no respect for. The skipper
had ordered the minesweeper to fire on villagers and their
huts near the beach of a South Pacific island. As Executive
Officer of the ship, Robert saw no justification for this
act and, by giving slightly incorrect sightings for the
guns, saw that the first shots fired landed wide of their
mark. This gave the villagers time to flee prior to the
destruction of their village. According to Robert, the
skipper was incensed but there was nothing he could do about
it. He was separated from active duty in October of 1945
but remained in the Naval Reserves until well into the
1950's. He did not serve in the Korean War. On 15 JUN 1944
he married Mary at Honolulu, Hawaii.
After World War II, Robert became the Business Manager
of "Radio Life" magazine, then founded his own publication,
"Western Selling", which was none too successful. He then
took a position as publisher with Jenkins Publishing, and
oversaw the production of "Western Metals", a trade magazine
for the metals industry. In the three years between 1946
and 1949 Robert and Mary had two children: Marshall
Frederic (born 14 MAY 1946) and Claire Margurite (born 21
JUL 1949).
Soon after Marshall's birth, Robert's mother died (25
JUL 1946) and the couple and their young baby moved back
into the Johnson family home at 2140 West 21st Street in the
West Adams area of Los Angeles to help his father who was
taking his loss very poorly. In 1949 they moved into
post-war housing on Crenshaw Boulevard, then onto Moonstone
Avenue in Manhattan Beach before building their own home at
347 Amalfi Drive in Santa Monica Canyon.
In 1958 he accepted the position of Publisher with King
Publications which headed up a group of trade magazines in
San Francisco, and the family sold their home and bought a
much larger home on Paradise Drive in the Tiburon area of
Marin County. At this point the marriage, which had
been rocky in Southern California before the move (at one
point Robert moved out of the house to Malibu for a few
weeks), fell apart with considerable recriminations, and
Robert and Mary divorced in 1959. In early 1960, as soon as
the divorce was final, Robert married Joy Coiner (nee
Gettle) who was his secretary at King Publications.
On 10 JUL 1962, on the occasion of his fiftieth
birthday, Robert Johnson inherited the $178,000 balance from
the estate of his maternal grandfather, and went to Europe
with Joy for five months -- it being his only trip to the
Continent. Upon his return in 1963, he moved back to
Southern California and bought another large house, this at
13033 Sky Valley Road at the top of Mandeville Canyon in Los
Angeles' Bel Aire area. He founded his own firm, Robert C.
Johnson and Associates, Publishers' Representatives, with
the remainder of his inheritance and was moderately
successful in this venture until his unexpected death by a
heart attack (complicated by emphysema) on 28 JAN 1970 at
Glendale, California. His ashes were interred on 2 FEB 1970
at Chapel of the Pines, Los Angeles.
