John Eccles Sr.

M, b. circa 1762, d. 31 August 1845
John Eccles Sr. was born on circa 1762.
Calculated from burial date of 1845 aged 83.1
He married Martha Moorhouse on 2 August 1807 in Balne, Parish of Snaith, Yorkshire, England.
John's surname is spelt Heckels on the register. Witness Thomas Heckels could be his Brother or Uncle. John's age at marriage was 45 which could suggest that he was married before.2,3

As of July 1808, John was employed as a labourer in Pollington, Parish of Snaith, Yorkshire, England.4
He died on 31 August 1845 in Snaith, Yorkshire, England. The cause of death was not clear on the certificate and will be looked at more closely..
Index entry is Sup Registrars District Goole Union 1845 3rd Quarter Volume 22 Page 169. The informant was Betty Stones who made her mark. The registration District of Goole Union suggests that John Eccles was in the care of the Goole Union Workhouse. His occupation was given as Groom, aged 83.
Goole Poor Law Union was formed on 24th October 1837. Its operation was overseen by an elected Board of Guardians, 20 in number, representing its 18 constituent parishes and townships. The average annual poor-rate expenditure for the period 1835-7 had been £4,232 or 8s.0d. per head of the population.

Goole Union workhouse was erected in 1839 on a site at the north side of Booth Ferry Road in Goole. It was designed by John and William Atkinson who were also the architects of many other Yorkshire workhouses. After 1930, Goole workhouse became Goole Poor Law Institution and later St John's Hospital. The buildings have now been demolished and the site is now occupied by a supermarket.1,5
He was buried on 3 September 1845 in Snaith, Yorkshire, England.1

Elizabeth Stubbings Eckels

F, d. before 11 April 1851
Elizabeth Stubbings Eckels died before 11 April 1851 in York, Yorkshire, England.1 and was buried on 11 April 1851 in York, Yorkshire, England. The cause of death is unknown..
The death date of 1852 given in Ancestry.com conflicts with the burial date of 1851 in the Borthwick Institute. There may be some confusion as Elizabeth Stubbings Eckels apparently had a Daughter of the same name. There are two burial entries at the Borthwick Institute for the same name, both in April 1851 but nine days apart. It could be assumed that Mother and Daughter died around the same time and were buried on different days.2

John Render1

M
John Render witnessed the marriage of William Eccles and Sarah Matthews on 10 January 1872 at St. Mary's Parish Church in the Parish of Holy Trinity, Hull, Yorkshire, England; A description of St. Mary's Church, Hull is given in Kelly's Trade Directory of 1889. "Built prior to 1327. A handsome building of stone in the perpendicular style, with lofty square embattled western tower with primades containing 6 bells. It was perfectly restored in 1863-65 by the late Sir G. G. Scott RA at a cost of nearly £10,000. The living is a vicarage, gross yearly value £469, net £356, with residence, in the gift of Mrs. Scott of Sutton and held since 1884 by the Rev. James Williamson Hay Carr, of London University." The church in 1997 was badly in need of repair as the stonework is blackened and crumbling. The site of the Vicarage and the small St. Mary's Square that used to be alongside the Church has been replaced by a store and a solicitor's office building. No vestige of the vicarage and square remain. The surrounding buildings seem to dominate the Church, crowding it and making it difficult to get any idea of what it looked like in it's early years, before modern 'progress' spoilt the area. The church is the oldest building in Hull and deserves better treatment than it appears to have received.1,2
