Alexander Lucius Goff (46) was born 8 January 1809 near Frankfort, Hancock County, District of Maine. He is a son of John Goffe (49) and Jane Gregston (50). John Goffe emigrated from Ireland in 1801 andowned a farm on the west bank of the Penobscot River, north of Frankfort, Maine.

When Alexander was eight years old, his family moved to the area of Pittsburgh, PA. They left Maine 1 October 1817 and arrived in the Pittsburgh area 4 December 1817, taking 65 days to make the trip. They eventually settled in the area of Ohio Township (now Sewickly) in Allegheny County.

At the age of 13 or 14, Alexander joined the Methodist Episcopal Church, in which he continued in a very active role for the rest of his life.

On 1 April 1830, Alexander married Mary Rodenbaugh (48), a daughter of John Rodenbaugh (1056) and Elizabeth Fospinner (1057). Mary was born about 1809 in Ohio Township, Allegheny County, PA. Their only child, John Wesley Goff (107), was born 8 Jan 1831. Mary Rodenbaugh died 14 September 1833.

Alexander married a second time. His second marriage was to Mary Swier (47) on 17 Nov 1842 in Allegheny City (now Northside Pittsburgh), PA. Mary Swier is a daughter of John Schweyer (117) and Elizabeth ? (99). She was born 16 Oct 1816 (according to a transcript of church records) in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. According to a hand written note, and a recording in a family bible, she was born 30 October 1816.

Alexander's second child, Ann McCoy Goff (86) was born 8 September 1843 and died 8 August 1844 in Allegheny City. His third child, Alexander Homer Goff (108) was born 14 November 1844 and died 4 December 1845. Alexander's fourth child, Jane Settlemire Goff (87), was born 21 September 1846 and died 21 March 1848. Mary's fourth child (Alexander's fifth), Mary Elizabeth Goff (110), was born 5 April 1848 and lived into adulthood. However, the next child, Francis Garrison Goff (109), was born 20 May 1849 and died 2 December 1851. Alexander's seventh child, Albert Goff (104), was born 25 June 1851. The eighth child, William Cash Goff (111), was born 15 March 1853. Alexander's ninth child, Angeline Goff (28), was born 7 February 1856 and his tenth and last child, Emma Goff (91), was born 25 July 1857.

Although it is probable that all of the children who lived joined the Methodist Episcopal Church, surviving Certificates of Church Membership show that Emma and William Cash Goff joined the Bingham Street Methodist Episcopal Church in Birmingham (now Southside Pittsburgh) on 6 September 1868. Emma was 11 years old and William Cash was 14 years old.

City directories in the Pittsburgh area list Alexander as a Coal Merchant, living in Birmingham and East Birmingham (both of which are now part of Southside Pittsburgh). Later, he (and Albert) is listed as a retail grocer in Temperanceville (now West End, Pittsburgh) in the 1870 US Census. A letter still exists written by John Wesley Goff addressed to Alexander Goff, Woodville, Allegheny County, PA. The letter is dated 23 July 1879 and remarks on an accident in which Alexander and his daughter Emma were involved. Woodville is a few miles south of present day Carnegie, west of and adjoining Pittsburgh.

Alexander Lucius Goff died near Mansfield (present day Carnegie) 7 July 1879, at the age of seventy, possibly as a result of the accident mentioned in John Wesley Goff's letter. Mary died in Butler, Butler County, PA, 11 July 1902. She is buried in the Thomas Evans plot in Southside Cemetery, Pittsburgh, PA.
