Welcome
to the Evans Family History website. Evans is one of the most
common surnames in the United States, and even more so in Wales.
Because of the way in which the Welsh chose to adopt surnames,
Evans is one of the most common Welsh surnames (along with Jones
and Williams); many families who bear the name are not related.
My Evans family originates with Thomas Theodoric Evans and his
wife, Margaret Morgan, of Cardiff and Tredegar, Wales, a coal-mining
family who came to the United States in the 1850's. They eventually
settled in the vicinity of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Of course, a family is the end
result of many names other than the surname. My ancestors also
come from the Jackson family, my mother's name, descended from
David Jackson and Mary Long of Augusta County, Virginia. Going
back through the generations, my ancestral families also include
Gould (Gult), Hill, Goff (Goffe, McGeough), Swier (Shweyer, Schweyer),
Montgomery, Fulton, Chappell and many others whom I have tried
to include on this website.
I have been actively collecting
information on my family history since 1989, and have by this
time amassed quite a large amount. It has helped tremendously
that many of my ancestors gathered and stayed in Western Pennsylvania,
eventually coming together in Allegheny County, PA. It has also
helped tremendously that, as a result of this website, I have
"met" many cousins who have also provided information.
Nevertheless, I feel that I am far from finished--I do not think
that I have even found all the "easy" information,
yet. Still, I have as much as I have seen in many published genealogies.
I also realize such a work is never really finished, and so I
have decided to publish what I have while I am still pursuing
more.
The World Wide Web offers the
best opportunity for publishing a work continually in process,
since it is a relatively easy matter to update and add material
to what has gone before while keeping it before those who are
most interested, and, it provides instant gratification which
does not come from a printed work. Therefore, this website can
be viewed as a living document, continually changing as I have
the time to work on it.
The information published on
this website is derived from original sources or published documentation.
Where it is derived from documentation, it is verified, where
possible, from a second, unrelated source. Much of the information
that I have placed on this website comes from cousins, most of
whom I have never met in person, whom I have found serendipitously
in the course of my research, or who have found me in the course
of theirs. I would like especially to thank Phyllis Rowan, Willard
Carroll, Jerry Hobson, Charles DeFrance, Jane Friend, Beth Rollinson,
Virginia Brookes, Keri O'Dell, Sue Marsella, Ron Bloch, Maryan
Formy-Duval, Charles and Linda Montgomery and Sherry and Cindy
Minn among others. I would also like to thank Capt Ernie Normand,
Commanding Officer of the 52nd
Regmt Illinois Vols (reenactors) for including links from
his wesite to the pages here for John Hill and Orry Turner, who,
after all, were original members of the regiment.
I am more than happy to correspond
and share information with anyone. If you have information which
you think would be of interest to me, or if I have information
in which you are interested, and especially if you have information
which contradicts anything on this website, please contact me
directly, rather than through my guest book. I can be reached

A note on the format of
the pages on this website: I have provided many links to make
it easy to traverse the site; using the 'back' arrow will take
you to the opening page of the site. I am also making the photos
on the pages thumbnail sized in order to add more without increasing
the load time. Clicking on a thumbnail will bring up a full sized
version of any photo in which you are interested. I have also
provided copies of my sources where they are short one or two
page documents. These are scans of original documents or of copies
of original documents.
I hope that the information on
my website will prove to be of interest and of use to you. Please let me know if this
is the case.
