Amelia Williams
A Requiem Mass was offered June 16 at St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Hornitos for Mrs. Amelia Cademartori Williams, 90, a life-lone resident of Mariposa County. Mrs. Williams died June 13 at the John C. Fremont Hospital.
Born March 29, 1980 in Hornitos, she was a second generation Mariposan, as her mother Laura Castagnetto was born in Bear Valley in 1862. She was the last survivor of four children born to Laura and Giovanni Cademarto.
Mrs. Williams was raised in Hornitos and lived nearly her entire life in the wooden farame house to which her father brought her mother as a bride.
In 1908 she married the late Anthony Williams, a native of Hunter's Valley. The young couple continued to make their home in Hornitos while he was
employed by the Yosemite Valley Railroad. Williams died in 1949.
An active member of St. Catherine's Catholic Church when Hornitos was large enough tohave a full-time priest, Mrs. WIlliams and one of her school mates,
Edward Morrison, spearheaded a drive to restore the 115 year old church several years ago.
She also was responsible for keeping alive the Festival of Lights. The old custom, dating back to the days when Hornitos' population was in large part
Mexican, requires the relatives and friends of those buried in the Catholic Cemetery to place lighted candles on the graves on All Saints and All Souls nights.
For many years she served Hornitos as the town nurse and midwife, once delivering twins. She was a charter member of the Hornitos School Patrons Club. In the early 1970s Mrs. Williams and Morrison served as Grand Marshals of the Mariposa County Fair Parade.
The Williams' had two sons, Winfred of Mariposa and Carvel of Merced, and also raised her nephew, Mervyn Caremartori of Buena Park. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Gary, Trent and Bill of Mariposa and Bill of Mariposa and Carvel Jr. and Susan of Merced, and two great grandchildren.
Rosary was recited Sunday evening at the Ivers and Alcorn Chapel in Merced.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Hornitos Patrons Club church restoration fund or the Good Shepherd Lutheran Home of the West in Terra Bella, Calif.
