Vera Evelyn (Coon) Shaw 1900-1981

Vera Coon Shaw, 81, of 225 Plumb St., died Monday at Edgerton Memorial Hospital.
She was born January 23, 1900 in Rockdale, Wis. and moved to Milton Junction shortly thereafter when her father, Dr. George E. Coon, set up a medical practice there.
She graduated from the Milton Junction high school and Milton College and was married to Leland C. Shaw, Sept. 3, 1921. The couple lived in Elwood Ind., for three years before returning to Milton where her husband joined the faculty of Milton College.
Mrs. Shaw was a life member of the Milton Junction Seventh Day Baptist Church and served as organist for over 50 years. She taught children's classes in the Bible School and for some time was a trustee and acting treasurer.
She served as assistant librarian at Milton College for a number of years and worked as a ballot clerk for many elections. She also sang in the Choral Union for several years.
Mrs. Shaw was past president of the Milton Woman's Club, an active member of the Past Presidents Club, and a member of the Woman's Circle of the Milton Seventh Day Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband and her brother, Dr. G. W. Coon of Corona Del Mar, Calif., and several nieces and nephews.

Leland C. Shaw, 95, professor of English at Milton College for 48 years, died Monday, Oct. 5, 1992 at Memorial Community Hospital, Edgerton.
He was born March 3, 1897 in Milton, the son of Dr. Edwin B. and Nellie (Campbell) Shaw. He attended schools in Milton and Plainfield, N. J., graduating from Milton College in 1919. He was married to Vera Coon on Sept. 3, 1921. She died on July 20, 1981.
After attending graduate school at the University of Wisconsin, he taught at Salem College, Salem W.V. and at Elwood, Ind. prior to joining the teaching staff at Milton College in 1924, where he taught until retiring in 1972.
While at Milton College, he served on the Athletic Board, and was the first recipient of the college's "Pillar of Milton" award. The Shaw Memorial Library Building was named for him and his father, who also taught at Milton College. He was a long-time member of the Milton Junction Seventh Day Baptist Church. He was a charter member of the Southern Wisconsin, Northern Illinois Gladiola Society. Well known as a grower and judge of gladiolas, he judged at flower shows at the Wisconsin State Fair for many years.
He was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. He was a charter member of the Republican Presidential task force.
He is survived by one sister, Stephana Shaw of Milton, and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, one sister and one brother.
Private services are being arranged by Albrecht Funeral Home with Rev. Herbert Saunders officiating. Burial will be in Milton Cemetery. A memorial is being established in his name.
