Tradition has it that Mathias was the son of Captain George SPENGLER and that he married a woman named Juliana.
This may be the same Mathew Spangler who signed the Patriots' Oath in Maryland in 1778. Mathias' name next appears in the Probate Records of Washington Country (MD) in 1781. His will was filed in the Orphans' Court at Hagerstown (MD) on March 28, 1781 and was still available in 1894. He must have joined the army because he eventually died as a result of wounds he received at the Battle of Trenton in the Revolutionary War.
Mathias moved from York to Maryland and became Frederick's first blacksmith. He later moved to Sharpsburg (MD). A reference to him from 1781 is found in the Probate Records of Washington County (MD) at Hagerstown. |
