HARNEY, Clarence W. (1895-1978) served with the Barrow Medical Unit (out of Lexington, KY) of the American Expeditionary Forces.  He enlisted immediately after graduation from the University of Kentucky (with a degree in mathematics) in April 1917.  Clarence W. Harney was shipped to the U.S. Army Base Hospital No. 40 at  Sarisbury Court, Southampton, England, with the Barrow Medical Unit. A year later the Barrow Medical Unit was transported to Marseille, France, where they served out the war. He later told his daughter the Spanish flu was raging throughout the wards and that many of our American troops died from the flu. Fortunately, he never caught the flu. He said whole wards would die in a week's time, and the bodies were stacked like cordwood until they could be buried. (His father, Currency A. Harney, contracted the flu back in Kentucky and almost died from it, Clarence not being told of this until he arrived home from the war.) After the war, Clarence said he thought they would never get home. Their unit remained in the south of France for some time waiting to be shipped back to the states. When they finally set sail, they traveled to the western Mediterranean, through the strait of Gibraltar and back to New York. He said seeing the Statue of "Lady Liberty" was overwhelming to all on the ship. They
endured a voyage home with little provisions and a dank and dirty hold. He told his daughter he slept on the deck of the ship and ate mostly oranges trying to avoid getting sick.  Chart MDTEG5B.SOU.
