Homer Jones of Calico Ridge, Sardis

Homer Jones poses on his horse-powered mowing machine.  Notice the lugs that form the “tread” on the iron wheel where Homer is resting his left foot.  These lugs pressing into the ground assured that the wheel would not slip as the mowing machine was pulled over the ground by the matched team of horses.  This wheel in turn rotated a set of gears that was connected to an ‘arm’ that converted the rotary motion into horizontal motion and drove a sickle-blade (not seen in the picture because of the horses).
