Generation One

     1.  John1 Mentz[i] was born in Sep 1834 in Germany.[ii]  He married (--?--) (--?--) before 1859.  He married Elisabeth Klebe, daughter of Christoph Klebe and Elisabeth Boettner, on 25 Nov 1863 in Wheeling, Ohio Co., WV.[iii]  He married Louise (--?--) circa 1887.[iv]  He died before 1910.[v]

     He immigrated circa 1850.[vi]  He was naturalized in 1852 in Wheeling, Ohio Co., VA.[vii] 

     The John Mentz family has been dificult to trace. While there is quite a bit of information available, significant pieces of information are missing that prevent me from reconstructing the family with absolute certainty. According to the 1900 census, John immigrated in 1850. I have not yet found him on a passenger list. A John Mentz was found in the 1860 census living in Wilmington, Delaware with his wife and one child. Nobody of that name was found in West Virginia or Ohio for that year. In 1852 a John Mentz applied for citizenship in Wheeling, (West) Virginia. If this is the correct John, then it is probably not the John Mentz who was in Wilmington in 1860.

     John did not marry Elisabeth Klebe until 1863, but the family included two older children (John and Andrew) in the 1870 census of Richland, Ohio County, West Virginia. We can assume from this that they were children from a previous marriage. John's marriage certificate states that his parents were Henry and Mary Mentz (see the International Genealogical Index entry for John). Sons John and Andrew were living together in Benwood, Marshall County, West Virginia in the 1900 census.

     It is difficult to determine for certain the children of John and Elisabeth Klebe Mentz. Charles and Henry were living with them in the 1870 census of Wheeling, West Virginia. But neither John or Elisabeth could be found in the 1880 census. My assumption is that Elisabeth died before then. Given the spacing of the children, it is possible that Elisabeth died between 1878 and 1880, possibly in childbirth. However, there is no evidence of a child born in that period.

     A strong indication that Elisabeth died before 1880 is that several of her children were found in the census of that year with Klebe relatives in Monroe County, Ohio. Henry, age 11, was living with Frederick and Mary (Klebe) Mehl in Switzerland Township.  Charles, age 13, and Mary, age 6, were living with their grandparents, Christopher and Elizabeth (Boettner) Klebe, in Salem Township. Catherine, age 7, was living with Charles and Caroline (Klebe) Krieger in Salem Township. William, age 9, may have been living with the Henry Lobstein family in Salem Township. I did not find George in that year. While only one of these children was enumerated with the surname Mentz, their ages and relationship to the families makes these assumptions fairly certain.

     In 1880 Andrew was living as a boarder with the William Maxwell family in Wheeling, West Virginia. I did not find the father John or sons John and George in that year. In 1910 and 1920, William Mentz was living with two Lash cousins in Wheeling. They were sons of Conrad and Julia (Klebe) Lash.

     In 1900 John Mentz was living with a wife Louisa in Bridgeport, Belmont County, Ohio. They had married about 1887. His son George was with them. Based on George’s age, he would have to be a son of Elisabeth Klebe. Louisa was widowed by 1910, so John must have died sometime before that.

     Children of John1 Mentz and (--?--) (--?--) both born in VA were as follows:

                               i.    John2 Mentz[ix] was born circa May 1859.6  He died between 1900 and 1910.6

                     2       ii.    Andrew Mentz was born circa Jan 1863.  He married Margaret Kohoe on 30 Oct 1894 in Mingo Junction, Jefferson Co., OH. Rev. J. T. Black conducted the ceremony.  He married Sarah A. (--?--) circa 1909.

     Elisabeth Klebe[x] was born circa 1845 in Reichensachsen, Hessen, Germany.[xi]  She died between 1877 and 1880.5  She immigrated on 8 Jan 1847 into Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., PA, on the ship Brig Bremen.[xii]

     Children of John1 Mentz and Elisabeth Klebe were as follows:

                     3        i.    Charles Christopher2 Mentz was born on 14 Feb 1867 in Wheeling, Ohio Co., WV.  He married Elizabeth Augusta Boles, daughter of Thomas Boles and Susan Marquis, on 24 Jul 1886.

                     4       ii.    Henry Mentz was born circa Feb 1869 in Ohio Co., WV.  He married Katherine M. Hartman, daughter of George Hartman and Elizabeth Urtz, circa 1897.

                             iii.    William Peter Mentz[xiii] was born in 1872 in Ohio Co., WV.[xiv]  He died on 14 Jun 1935 in Orange Co., CA.[xv]

                     5      iv.    Mary A. Mentz was born on 13 Nov 1872 in Monroe Co., OH.  She married Charles Edward Sengewald, son of Frederick Sengewald and Wilhelmina Kuphefner, circa 1892.

                              v.    Catherine Mentz[xvi] was born circa 1873 in OH.6

                             vi.    George Mentz[xvii] was born circa Sep 1876 in WV.6  He died after 1900.6

     Louise (--?--)[xviii] was born circa Feb 1845 in Germany.6  She died after 1910.6  She immigrated circa 1882.6

     There were no children of John1 Mentz and Louise (--?--).

Generation Two

     2.  Andrew2 Mentz (John1)[xix] was born circa Jan 1863 in VA.[xx]  He married Margaret Kohoe on 30 Oct 1894 in Mingo Junction, Jefferson Co., OH. Rev. J. T. Black conducted the ceremony.[xxi]  He married Sarah A. (--?--) circa 1909.6  He died between 1910 and 1920.6

     Margaret Kohoe was born between 1873 and 1874 in Ohio Co., WV.[xxii]  She died circa 17 Jul 1897 in Brilliant, Jefferson Co., OH.[xxiii]

     Children of Andrew2 Mentz and Margaret Kohoe were:

                     6        i.    Catherine M.3 Mentz was born on 7 Jul 1896 in Jefferson Co., OH.  She married William Major circa 1919.

     Sarah A. (--?--)[xxiv] was born circa 1880 in WV.6

     There were no children of Andrew2 Mentz and Sarah A. (--?--).

     3.  Charles Christopher2 Mentz (John1)[xxv] was born on 14 Feb 1867 in Wheeling, Ohio Co., WV.[xxvi]  He married Elizabeth Augusta Boles, daughter of Thomas Boles and Susan Marquis, on 24 Jul 1886.[xxvii]  He died on 16 May 1936 in Kirkwood Twp., Belmont Co., OH, at age 69.[xxviii]  He was buried on 19 May 1936 in Greenwood Cemetery, Bellaire, Belmont Co., OH.[xxix]

     He lived on 16 May 1936 in Sewellsville, Belmont Co., OH.[xxx]

     Elizabeth Augusta Boles[xxxi] was born on 2 Feb 1870 in Graysville, Wetzel Co., WV.[xxxii]  She died on 6 Oct 1941 in Shadyside, Belmont Co., OH, at age 71.[xxxiii]  She was buried on 9 Oct 1941 in Greenwood Cemetery, Bellaire, Belmont Co., OH.33  She lived on 6 Oct 1941 in 4602 Lincoln Ave., Shadyside, Belmont Co., OH.[xxxiv]

     Children of Charles Christopher2 Mentz and Elizabeth Augusta Boles were as follows:

                               i.    Walter3 Mentz[xxxv] was born circa Jan 1887 in OH.6  He died after 1936.[xxxvi]

                              ii.    Frank D. Mentz[xxxvii] was born on 5 Sep 1889 in Bellaire, Belmont Co., OH.[xxxviii]  He married Cora Elizabeth Davis.  He died on 26 Mar 1973 in Colerain, Belmont Co., OH, at age 83.[xxxix]

     He lived in 1917 in 25 Bow St., Wheeling, Ohio Co., WV.[xl]  He was a stationary engineer in 1917.40  He lived in 1942 in Colerain, Belmont Co., OH.[xli]

     Cora Elizabeth Davis was born on 24 Jun 1894 in OH.[xlii]  She died on 6 Jan 1979 in Citrus Co., FL, at age 84.[xliii]

                             iii.    Ada Garnet Mentz35 was born in Dec 1892 in Belmont Co., OH.6  She married William W. Hummel circa 1907.6

     William W. Hummel was born on 31 Mar 1883.[xliv]  He died on 2 Apr 1961 in Lancaster, Fairfield Co., OH, at age 78.[xlv]  He lived in 1918 in 400 S. Maple St., Lancaster, Fairfield Co., OH.[xlvi]

                             iv.    Minerva Mentz37 was born in Nov 1893 in Belmont Co., OH.[xlvii]  She married Herbert J. Davis.  She died on 5 Dec 1962 in Belmont Co., OH, at age 69.45

     Herbert J. Davis was born on 21 Apr 1891 in Dover, Tuscarawas Co., OH.[xlviii]  He died on 30 Oct 1966 in Shadyside, Belmont Co., OH, at age 75.[xlix]  He lived in 1917 in 228 23rd St, Bellaire, Belmont Co., OH.[l]  He was an inspector for a steel company in 1917.50  He lived in 1942 in 225 Bow St., Wheeling, Ohio Co., WV.[li]

                              v.    Mary Elizabeth Mentz37 was born on 16 Oct 1897 in Bellaire, Belmont Co., OH.[lii]  She married John Edward Owens before 1917.  She died on 13 Mar 1992 in Monroe, OH, at age 94.[liii]

     John Edward Owens was born on 22 Jan 1891 in Glencoe, Belmont Co., OH.[liv]  He died on 2 Feb 1962 in Bellaire, Belmont Co., OH, at age 71.45  He lived in 1917 in Shadyside, Belmont Co., OH.[lv]  He was a miner in 1917.55  He lived in 1942 in W. 47th St., Shadyside, Belmont Co., OH.[lvi]

                             vi.    James Martin Mentz[lvii] was born on 1 Oct 1899 in Monroe, OH.[lviii]  He died in Dec 1983 in Hernando, Citrus Co., FL, at age 84.[lix]

     He lived in 1918 in 221 23rd St., Bellaire, Belmont Co., OH.[lx]  He was a coal miner in 1918.60

                            vii.    Andrew Mentz[lxi] was born on 5 Apr 1902 in Belmont Co., OH.[lxii]  He married Phama V. (--?--) circa 1924.6  He died on 7 Oct 1974 in Bellaire, Belmont Co., OH, at age 72.[lxiii]

     Phama V. (--?--) was born on 5 Jun 1908 in OH.[lxiv]  She died on 5 Dec 1984 in Shadyside, Belmont Co., OH, at age 76.64

                           viii.    Katherine Mentz61 was born circa 1908 in Belmont Co., OH.6

                     7      ix.    Sarah Evelyn Mentz was born on 6 Jan 1912 in WV.  She married Louis August Keitz.  She and Louis August Keitz were divorced in Jun 1943.  She married Nick Lewis circa Jul 1943.  She married Carl Edson Oberle after 1954.  She married John Wesley Fletcher in 1959.

                              x.    Mildred Leona Mentz[lxv] was born circa 1914 in WV.[lxvi]  She married Lawrence Edward Hinds, son of James Hinds and Cora Trasher, circa 1929.6  She married Guy Clement Cole after 30 Apr 1930.6  She died on 2 Feb 1974 in Delaware Co., OH.45  She was buried in Feb 1974 in Rose Hill Cemetery, Bellaire, Belmont Co., OH.

     Lawrence Edward Hinds was born on 1 Mar 1912 in Barnesville, Belmont Co., OH.[lxvii]  He died on 30 Apr 1930 in Warren Twp., Belmont Co., OH, at age 18.[lxviii]  He was buried on 3 May 1930 in Chapel Cemetery, Warren Twp., Belmont Co., OH.[lxix]

     Guy Clement Cole was born on 7 Dec 1902 in OH.[lxx]  He died on 21 Jan 1992 in Columbus, Franklin Co., OH, at age 89.[lxxi]

                             xi.    Thomas Delbert Mentz[lxxii] was born circa 1916 in OH.66  He died on 1 Mar 1974 in Columbiana, Trumbull Co., OH.45

     4.  Henry2 Mentz (John1)[lxxiii] was born circa Feb 1869 in Ohio Co., WV.6  He married Katherine M. Hartman, daughter of George Hartman and Elizabeth Urtz, circa 1897.6  He died between 1920 and 1930 in Santa Clara Co., CA.6

     Katherine M. Hartman[lxxiv] was born on 7 Mar 1867 in St. Louis, St. Louis Co., MO.[lxxv]  She died on 8 Nov 1957 in Santa Clara Co., CA, at age 90.[lxxvi]

     Children of Henry2 Mentz and Katherine M. Hartman both born in Santa Clara Co., CA, were as follows:

                               i.    Charles J.3 Mentz[lxxvii] was born on 16 Sep 1894.[lxxviii]  He married Hattie G. Martin circa 1917.6  He died on 4 Jan 1974 in Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz Co., CA, at age 79.[lxxix]

     He lived in 1917 in 1182 Dourner St, San Jose, Santa Clara Co., CA.[lxxx]  He was a farmer in 1917.80

     Hattie G. Martin[lxxxi] was born on 18 Feb 1894 in CA.[lxxxii]  She died on 28 Jul 1964 in Santa Cruz Co., CA, at age 70.[lxxxiii]

                     8       ii.    Walter Theodore Mentz was born on 16 Aug 1899.  He married Clara May Jackson circa 1921.

     5.  Mary A.2 Mentz (John1)[lxxxiv] was born on 13 Nov 1872 in Monroe Co., OH.[lxxxv]  She married Charles Edward Sengewald, son of Frederick Sengewald and Wilhelmina Kuphefner, circa 1892.6  She died on 16 Dec 1946 in St. Louis Hospice, Louisville, Stark Co., OH, at age 74.[lxxxvi]  She was buried on 17 Dec 1946 in Greenwood Cemetery, Wheeling, Ohio Co., WV.86

     She lived on 16 Dec 1946 in Congress Lake, Hartville, Stark Co., OH.86

     Charles Edward Sengewald[lxxxvii] was born on 12 Sep 1860 in Wheeling, Ohio Co., WV.[lxxxviii]  He died on 27 Sep 1942 in Lake Twp., Stark Co., OH, at age 82.[lxxxix]  He was buried on 30 Sep 1942 in Greenwood Cemetery, Wheeling, Ohio Co., WV.89  He was a gardener in 1942.  He lived on 27 Sep 1942 in Congress Lake, Hartville, Stark Co., OH.89

     Children of Mary A.2 Mentz and Charles Edward Sengewald were:

                               i.    Emma E.3 Sengewald[xc] was born in Sep 1893 in WV.6

     6.  Catherine M.3 Mentz (Andrew2, John1)[xci] was born on 7 Jul 1896 in Jefferson Co., OH.[xcii]  She married William Major circa 1919.6  She died on 6 Sep 1989 in Wheeling, Ohio Co., WV, at age 93.[xciii]

     William Major[xciv] was born on 7 May 1894 in DC.[xcv]  He died in Nov 1976 in Wheeling, Ohio Co., WV, at age 82.[xcvi]

     Children of Catherine M.3 Mentz and William Major were as follows:

                               i.    Bertram L.4 Major[xcvii] was born on 23 Sep 1920 in Wheeling, Ohio Co., WV.[xcviii]  He married Avonelle Rowe circa 1947.[xcix]  He died on 11 Dec 2004 in Cabell Co., WV, at age 84.[c]  He was buried on 14 Dec 2004 in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens, Huntington, Cabell Co., WV.99

                              ii.    Esther Elizabeth Major97 was born circa 1925 in WV.6  She married William C. Schuetz.

     William C. Schuetz was born on 8 Jun 1919.[ci]  He died on 8 Sep 1992 at age 73.101

     7.  Sarah Evelyn3 Mentz (Charles Christopher2, John1)72 was born on 6 Jan 1912 in WV.47  She married Louis August Keitz.[cii]  She and Louis August Keitz were divorced in Jun 1943.[ciii]  She married Nick Lewis circa Jul 1943.103  She and Nick Lewis were divorced in 1954 in Lancaster, Fairfield Co., OH.103  She married Carl Edson Oberle after 1954.103  She married John Wesley Fletcher in 1959.103  She died on 29 Nov 1997 in Lancaster, Fairfield Co., OH, at age 85.45  She was buried in Dec 1997 in Geiger Cemetery, Pleasantville, Fairfield Co., OH.103

     Louis August Keitz was born circa 1901 in OH.45  He died on 12 Jan 1965 in Bellaire, Belmont Co., OH.45

     Nick Lewis[civ] was born on 26 Sep 1888 in Rhodes, Greece.[cv]  He married Bertha S. Vannest, daughter of Thomas Vannest and Katherine (--?--), before 1920.6  He died on 6 Nov 1962 in Akron, Summit Co., OH, at age 74.[cvi]  He was a self-employed restaurant owner in 1942.[cvii]  He lived in 1942 in 3058 Belmont St., Bellaire, Belmont Co., OH.107

     Children of Sarah Evelyn3 Mentz and Nick Lewis are:

                               i.    William P.4 Keitz was born on 23 Apr 1943 in Bellaire City Hospital, Bellaire, Belmont Co., OH.103  He married Nancy Ann Highley, daughter of Carl Highley and Miriam Bookman, on 4 Jun 1967.103  He married Pamela E. Martin in 1982.103  He and Pamela E. Martin were divorced in 1994.103

     Nancy Ann Highley was born on 18 Jun 1947 in Lancaster, Fairfield Co., OH.103  She died on 23 Apr 1982 in Lancaster, Fairfield Co., OH, at age 34.[cviii]  She was buried in Apr 1982 in Maple Grove Cemetery, Lancaster, Fairfield Co., OH.103

     Carl Edson Oberle was born on 30 Aug 1890 in Carroll, Fairfield Co., OH.[cix]  He died on 14 Mar 1958 in Lancaster, Fairfield Co., OH, at age 67.[cx]  He was buried in Mar 1958 in Geiger Cemetery, Pleasantville, Fairfield Co., OH.103  He lived in 1942 in 3900 Highland Ave., Shadyside, Belmont Co., OH.[cxi]

     There were no children of Sarah Evelyn3 Mentz and Carl Edson Oberle.

     John Wesley Fletcher[cxii] was born on 26 Jun 1923 in OH.[cxiii]  He died on 29 Dec 1970 in Fairfield Co., OH, at age 47.[cxiv]  He was buried in Jan 1971 in Thornville, Perry Co., OH.103

     There were no children of Sarah Evelyn3 Mentz and John Wesley Fletcher.

     8.  Walter Theodore3 Mentz (Henry2, John1)[cxv] was born on 16 Aug 1899 in Santa Clara Co., CA.[cxvi]  He married Clara May Jackson circa 1921.6  He died on 11 Feb 1972 in Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz Co., CA, at age 72.[cxvii]

     He lived in 1918 in 306 Dourner Ave., San Jose, Santa Clara Co., CA.[cxviii]  He was an engineer in 1918.118

     Clara May Jackson[cxix] was born on 8 Aug 1900 in NE.[cxx]  She died on 29 Sep 1996 in Santa Clara, NE, at age 96.[cxxi]

     Children of Walter Theodore3 Mentz and Clara May Jackson both born in Santa Clara Co., CA, are as follows:

                               i.    Betty E.4 Mentz119 was born on 3 Oct 1922.[cxxii]

                              ii.    Barbara June Mentz119 was born on 27 Jun 1925.[cxxiii]
