Notes for KENT MITCHELL:

It is possible that Kent Mitchell was born in Wales. A letter quoted in Graveyard Quilt and written by a descendent, Sarah Mitchell (#1386) says that he was born in Wales.

There are a number of other Mitchells in Harford Co, Maryland, including a Kent and other names the same as Kent Mitchell's children. They are probably related but as of 26 Aug 2001 it is unknown what the relationship may be.

On 2 Feb 1788 in Orphan's Court in Washington County, Pennsylvania, "The Court appoints Amos Gregg Guardian of the persons and properties of Elizabeth, Mary, Thomas, Sarah, Isaac, and Ezra Mitchel minor children of Kent Mitchel late of Washington County deceased."

Kent Mitchell was a Signer, Association of Freemen.

He made farming his business and has been very successful, owning at present 300 acres of fine land besides other property. He moved to Waynesburg in 1877, since which time he has been living a retired life. Mr. Mitchell's political views are Democratic, and he served two terms as overseer of the poor of Greene County...Mrs. Mitchell is a consistent member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church." (Perhaps this means that Mr. Mitchell was NOT a consistent member of that church.)

To all whom it may concern be it known that I, Isaac Mitchel of the Borough of Waynesbrug, Greene County, Pennsylvania do hereby make the following as and for my last will and testament, hereby revoking and making void all wills heretofor by me at any time made. Item One. I direct my executor herinafter named to pay all my just debts and funeral expenses as soon after my death as conveniently can be done.

Item fourth: As my son Thomas Mitchel has for many years had the use of my farm and in various ways received from me a large amount of property and now owes me a large amount, I therefor charge him with the same as an advancement and I hereby charge the said Thomas Mitchel with the sum of eight-hundred dollars and direct that his said sum of Eight-hundreds dollars be deductible out of his share in my estate.

Item fifth: I give and bequeath to my daughter Lucy Bosworth the sum of five hundred dollars to be paid to her out of my estate, this to be in addition to her equal share in my estate herinafter given to her.

Item sixxth. I give and bequeath to my daughter Elizabeth Mitchel the sum of One hundred dollars to be paid to her out of my estate, this to be paid to her in addition to her equal share in my estate hereinafter given to her.

Seventh. Out of the proceeds of my personal and real estate I direct my executor to pay my debts and the expenses of settling my estate and pay the legacies hereinbefore mentioned, then I order and direct that the balance remaining be divided equally between my six children, excepting my son Thomas who is to receive eight hundred dollars less than one share, that is to say, my daughter Margaret P. Ross is to receive one equal share, George Mitchel is to receive one equal share, Alever Ross Mitchell is to receive one equal share, Elizabeth Mitchell is to receive one equal share and Lucy Bosworth is to receive one equal share, my son Thomas Mitchell is to receive eight-hundred dollars less than one equal share on account of the above mentioned advancement. I direct that one third part of the purchase money remain in the land and be a charge theron during the lifetime of my wife Elizabeth and the interest thereon be paid to her semi-annually by the purchaser of said land. If any of my children shall institute legal proceedings or try to break or set aside this my last will and testament then I will and direct that such one or ones so attempting shall not receive any thing out of my estate, and any share _____given to him, her or them shall be equally divided among the remaining children who do not gain in such effort to break my will.

I hereby nominate, constitute and appoint my son-in-law Abner Ross as and for my executor of this my last will and testament. In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my bond and seal this eighteenth day of May A.D. 1898. Isaac Mitchell (his mark).

Mr. Isaac Mitchell died Saturday, May 28, 1898 of paralysis at the advanced age of 82. He was a native of this county, being born in Washington township. Notes for SHADRACH MITCHELL:

For a wonderful family story, as well as the descendents of Shadrach and Elizabeth (Roseberry) Mitchell, read the book by Linda Otto Lipsett: Elizabeth Roseberry Mitchell's Graveyard Quilt: An American Pioneer Saga. This book offers an historical context as well as a genealogy. It introduces many Mitchell family members with anecdotes.

Shadrach, his wife Elizabeth (Roseberry) and their five oldest children purchased a farm from Daniel Dye, Sr. in Monroe County, Ohio. They then joined his father and several of his siblings in Ohio.

Notes for MARGARET MITCHELL:

The stone for Margaret Ullom says Margaret B. Ullom. It appears to be much newer than the other stones of that age. It seems possible to me that the Bottenfield family has replaced it at a later date. I surmise it was the Bottenfield family because the stone for Jacob and the first Margaret Ullom are obviously original and are very much deteriorated.
