Martha Ann Evans
Martha Ann "Mattie" Evans Brown

Martha's tombstone We do not know much about Mattie, the youngest of Thomas Evans' children.  We were not sure she was one of Thomas' children, but a few members of the family back in Alabama remember when their kinfolk would go out to visit "Aunt Mattie Brown" in Oklahoma.  It is thought she might have visited back in Alabama once or twice herself when she got older.

She was born right about the time Thomas died.  She was born on November 14, 1856, in the Pine Springs community of Lamar County, Alabama.  We know Thomas died on May 3 of that same year, so she was born some six months after he passed away.  Lucinda would have been about 41 years old.  I assume that Lucinda passed away due to some sort of complications with Mattie's birth, because we do not know when Lucinda passed away, but Martha is on the 1860 census, at age 4, with her oldest full sister, Lucinda Emiline Evans Webb.

(Name should be Martha Evans, not Webb, but all the four last children listed here were Evans siblings)

Mattie must have grown up in Lamar County.  She would have just been able to remember the Civil War when she was a very young girl, but the family remained in Lamar County during the war.  We do not know exactly where she was on the 1870 census, but she must have still been a young girl in Lamar County (then known as Sanford County).

[Where is she?]

On December 2, 1875, Martha married John Brown.  The marriage record, in Lamar County, Alabama, lists her name only as "Martha Evans" and his only as "John Brown", but it looks like this must be them.  This newly married couple shows up on the 1880 Lamar County census (and this family is certainly the one that married in 1875):

We lose track of Mattie and her family at this point.  We know that she had at least four other girls, the oldest of which was born in 1886 in Tupelo.  This means the family must have moved over to Lee County, Mississippi shortly after this census and been there for a few years.  It must have been just a little after that that the family moved to Oklahoma.  We know that she was still having children in 1895, so her husband must have lived until at least that age, but we don't know what happens to him after that.

In 1910, she was on the census in LeFlore County:

Mattie was buried in the Monroe Cemetery in LeFlore County, Oklahoma, after her death in 1938, at the age of 81.

Children of Martha Ann "Mattie" Evans Brown

Florence Brown (md. ?)
We know nothing else about Florence other than that she was one year old on the 1870 census.  She may have died shortly after that.  No one remembers her, so this is the most likely scenario, but she might have married young and moved away also.

Harvey Brown (probably did not marry)
Harvey shares Mattie's tombstone in the Monroe Cemetery, but he certainly couldn't have been her husband (the poured concrete stone looks like they could be).  He was born in 1882 and died in 1900, at the age of 17 or 18 years old.

Ora Brown (md. John Mozart Garrett)
Ora was born on Chrismtas Eve, 1886, in Tupelo, Lee County, Mississippi.  She married John on July 31, 1946, in Oklahoma.  Together they had five children, four of which lived to an adult age.

Cora Brown (md. William W. Nichols)
Cora was born on February 24, 1899, in Monroe, LeFlore County, Okahoma.  She passed away there in April of 1975.

Mae Brown (md. Mr. Hindman)
Mae was born while the family was living in Missouri (in Rockville), on February 23, 1895.  She passed away at the age of 75 in August of 1970, in Poteau, LeFlore County, Oklahoma.

Della Brown (md. Mr. Smith)
Della was born in Osceola, St. Clair County, Missouri.  She married a Smith, but not much else is known about her.

? Brown (md. ?)
Mattie said in the 1910 census that she had five of eight children still living.  This means she must have had another child that either died young or was still alive then.

[I have also seen the names of "Dora" and "Belle" given as possible children, but have never seen any proof or heard anything else of them.- DAW]
