MarriageDeborah (Houghton?), 1774-1831; 10 children; Diane Flynn:" On the 14th of September, I typed David Colvin's name into the "Search GenForum" box and up he came -- in the Niles family. One little fragment of a sentence by Allen D. Niles caught my eye. Among the postings on a George Niles of Shaftsbury, VT., there were these words: "...his daughter Deb married David Colvin...." Today I received a photocopy of George NILES' will (Bennington VT Probate Records, Vol. 22, p. 387, LDS microfilm 27,961) from Allen. The magic words were there: "...among my three daughters Deborah Colvin the wife of David Colvin...." So, Deborah's maiden name was NILES, NOT Houghton, as some researchers had thought. (David COLVIN m., 2nd, Frances (GOYER)HOUGHTON, widow of Timothy.)
Deborah's father, George NILES (c.1743-1846!), is said to be a Soldier of the Revolution(not yet researched). Her mother, Elizabeth MATTESON (Abraham3,
Hezekiah2, Henry1)(1744/5-1831) was a second cousin to her husband David Colvin's mother, Sarah MATTESON (Thomas3, Francis2, Henry1)(1745-1831).2 "

LIVED FOUR SCORE YEARS AND TEN
In the year 1856 a family by the name of Houghton came to Michigan and settled in Oakland county. They had several boys growing up, and when the war broke out a few years later, the mother bid her husband and five of her boys God speed as they went forth to save their country's flag.
This same family, thirteen in number, at the close of the war settled near Cass City in Greenleaf township. In the year 1874 the father died and the wife, Mrs. Rua Houghton, the subject of this sketch, moved back to Oakland county and lived in the midst of some of her children until about ten years ago, when she returned here to spend her declining years with those of her children who reside in and near Cass City. The most of those years she has made her home with Mrs. R. H. Warner, the oldest daughter, at whose home she died last Saturday.
Mrs. Houghton, the mother of A. G. and D. M. Houghton, was born in Vermont, Nov. 10, 1812. She was married to David Houghton at the age of 18 years and had the honored distinction of raising a family of thirteen children, eleven of whom are living. The funeral was held at the M. E. church on Tuesday, the pastor Dr. Gifford officiating. Thus another honored woman who wrought great sacrifice for her country is now at rest.5

ObituaryFrom the Bennington Banner April 30, 1965

Mrs. Nellie Houghton, 90, widow of the late Clark H. Houghton, died at Warner Nursing Home this morning. She had been a patient for nine years, and formerly resided on Harvard Street.

A daughter of William and Mary (Elwell) Warn, she was born Sept. 15, 1874 in Bennington and had lived there all her life. She had attended local schools and was married Oct. 23, 1900 to Mr. Houghton. Her husband died more than 50 years ago.

Her home and family had been her main interest. She was a good neighbor, especially with the children while she was active.

Survivors are one son, Myron W. Houghton of Bennington, one daughter, Mrs. Carl (Mary) Bump, also of Bennington; one grandson Wayne Houghton of Hoosick Falls, New York; three great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held at Mahar and Son Funeral Home, Sunday at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Melvin R. McGaughey, First Methodist Church pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the family lot in White Chapel Cemetery.
